Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Langford taps into a renewed interest in such practices as solitude, meditation and spiritual direction in this handbook, which employs a gardening theme. Grouping the practices into three metaphorical parts—seeds, roots and branches—the author and director of communications for the Chicago Province of the Jesuits elaborates on tools that, he writes, help prepare the soil of our lives to receive and nurture God's seeds of faith. Langford calls this soul gardening, a term employed by a friend who is a minister and gardener. In assembling this guide, Langford quotes extensively from other writers such as Richard Foster (Celebration of Discipline), but he also writes as one who is familiar with the practices he explains. For example, he tells about how he has used a spiritual director, and in the chapter on walking with the saints, he shares a moving story about praying in the cave in Spain where St. Ignatius went to discern his life's direction. Besides writing about various practices, Langford includes a list of reflective questions and things to do at the end of each chapter that may be especially helpful for groups reading the book together. I'm not catholic so don't let the book category fool you. The author touches on many of the deep and spiritual questions I had, but thought no one else did. Sometimes the book is a little esoteric, but overall, hits the mark. Most chapter exercises are very useful and doable, but some would require more down time than most of us have. This book truly touched me; I have recommended it to several people already and am buying several for gifts.

After reading every single sentence and savoring many, I keep going back to this little treasure of a book. Langford's writing is accessible and honest. It is realistic which is encrouaging to a daily struggler. I particularly liked the chapters on doubt and solitude. I now more readily recognize God in ways and places where I had not noticed. Seeds is a book I will not give away - I need to refer to it from time to time - but it is a book I have bought, and will continue to do so, to give as gifts. Langford has written a new long-time friend!

This is a terrific little book chock full of practical tips to nourish a vital spiritual life whether one is a church goer or not. Well grounded in the Christian tradition but fully in touch with contemporary living and its challenges to staying in touch with your inner source. Read it over one time as Langford suggests and then carry it with you and take it bit by bit over a period of months. It does not grow stale and keeps me on track and grounded in a very busy life.

I just have really enjoyed this little book. It would make a great book for anyone divinely inspired. It was a fast read but with work you can do after reading each section. This is a book I will reflect back upon countless times.
