KENNY GARRETT
PUSHING THE WORLD AWAY

For his third Mack Avenue Records release, Pushing the World Away, alto/soprano saxophonist, composer/bandleader Kenny Garrett literally had to “push away” a steady flow of distractions to get to the inner core of the album, shifting priorities in his schedule and diving deep into the essence of the music.

Editorial Reviews

Seeds from the Underground is music people, past and present, who planted seeds in my life-directly and indirectly. It s not a dedication record although there are songs dedicated to certain people. Kenny Garrett is also a member of the DownBeat Hall of Fame being a three-time Alto Sax winner!

I've a big fan of Kenny Garrett since the '90s.

His strong, attractive song-writing skills are on display to great effect here, coupled with his quite unique, powerful, and "pert" saxophone improvisations.

I'll post a more detailed review later, but for now I just want to say that if you like Kenny Garrett, you should love this new release.

Seeds From the Underground is a superb recording by Kenny Garrett. His strong, attractive song-writing skills are on display to great effect here, coupled with his quite unique, powerful, and "pert" saxophone improvisations. Everything in this CD is deeply rhythmic and swings like crazy, but in Kenny's own unique and attractive way. I particularly enjoy his pianist Benito Gonzalez, who is superbly recorded and makes a very strong improvisational stance. Please don't hesitate to purchase this CD. You won't regret it.

I believe Kenny Garrett's last release before this one was the excellent 'Sketches of MD' in 2009. This new CD has been well worth the wait in the opinion of this modern jazz fan. Every track is enjoyable at least, and the best ones are moving and transcendent. I'll post a more detailed review later, but for now I just want to say that if you like Kenny Garrett, you should love this new release.

This CD is another incredible output comparable to Beyond the Wall--once again spiritually inspired jazz at its best. When Kenny is into this type of music, he is at a level equal to its best practitioners including Coltrane, Sonny, Pharoah, and Azar. The compositions are great, and Kenny's playing is at the highest level as usual. I saw him recently live playing these compositions and he was playing as strong and spiritually inspired as anyone playing today. Buy this CD, and catch him live on his current tour while he is transmitting the sacred sound.

Kenny Garrett is arguably the best alto saxophonist on the face of the Planet Earth; simply put, he is on a par with the masters of the art of jazz (ask Miles). The fact that he is from Detroit, a city that in many ways exemplifies the extraordinary potential that the human race has to offer (for evil, as well as for good) could easily be overlooked- if Kenny was willing to let that happen. Clearly, that is not the case. In this wonderful CD Kenny plays with the verve, the fire, and inventiveness, the technical command, the soul and funk and blues and the joy of existence for which he is so well known; only this time it's PERSONAL. And the mere fact that he is so willing to embrace, to celebrate, the people and experiences that have served to form him as a musician and as a person, gives this CD a particular resonance. At a time when so many people are finding reasons to bash Detroit, Kenny finds ways to celebrate the city, and the strength and beauty of the people that live there. ONE MILLION STARS.

I bought this CD to make myself listen more to alto players and to transcribe their solos (being an alto player who mostly listens to tenor players). I cannot stop listening, especially track #3, which has several interesting time signature changes. I have been a serious jazz player and listener for many years, and I have to say this is the best album I have heard in YEARS. I recommend this wholeheartedly, I promise you will love it!

At age 18, he was playing in The Duke Ellington Band, three years later he was playing in The Mel Lewis Orchestra playing the music of Thad Jones. At 24 cut he his first album as a bandleader, Introducing Kenny Garrett. Along the way, he has played in small ensembles, recording the music of the legends such as Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker. he has played with still yet other legends, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Brian Blade, Marcus Miller, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, and Mulgrew Miller. During that time, he became one of those legends and has cut some of the seminal works of the post-bop era, including albums such as 1989s Prisoner Of Love and 1992s, Black Hope and he has won Grammys.

"Seeds From The Underground" back storyOver the 30 plus year career he has become recognized as the preeminent alto sax player of his generation, and a pretty damn good flautist. With, Seeds From the Underground, Garrett has given notice that these qualities have not only become more impressive, but have provided him with the platform and credentials to expand and communicate his musical vision. On Seeds he not only returns to an all acoustic format with an explosive and very talented quartet, but this isn't just any quartet, and they really couldn't be because this isn't your average acoustic jazz set either.

His time in The Five Peace Band, a jazz super group consisting of Garrett, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Christian McBride and Vinnie Colaiuta, pushed Garrett to explore unusual rhythm and meter and his approach to them.

Any post-BeBop era lovers of this flavor are in for a sweet music treat. Whether a fine ballad or straight ahead "funk", every track has a pleasant taste.
