In this last installment in Herries' superb English Civil War series, we meet up again with the Saunders and Mortimer families. The children have grown, and King Charles II has been restored to the throne. Angelica Saunders has known Hal and Claire Mortimer all her life, and although she has always had feelings for Hal, he just sees her as Claire's pesky friend. It's Claire Hal has always assumed he would marry, but when she becomes engaged to another, his lord-of-the-manor pride is severely wounded, and he seeks solace with a gypsy girl. In the meantime, Angelica has caught the attention of a suitor, but her heart is with Hal. Family history appears about to repeat itself, only this time it may truly destroy all, as brothers come to blows and an evil witchfinder points his finger toward Angelica. It's remarkable how Herries can grab the reader's attention with her double family saga while also intertwining history into her tale, making it all the more powerful.
