I purchased these seeds last year and was very happy with the results. I was anxious to get them going so started them indoors with my veggies and transplanted them outside once the danger of frost had passed. As it turned out, it was unnecessary as the seeds I sowed directly quickly caught the ones I had babied inside. The only advantage the ones started indoors had was protection from birds. Many survived the initial planting, but once the birds got wind of these babies, they'd eat the tender seedlings. Apparently the birds (and chipmunks?) will eat the seedlings until the second set of leaves develop. In order to combat this, I placed wire mesh over the seedings until the second leaves arrived and I was good to go. Additionally I collected seeds from many of my flowers to use this year! We'll see how the second generation turns out!

Edit to update on saved seed usage -

I figured a bright red sunflower would get me bright red sunflower seeds, right? Wrong. Not knowing anything about cross-pollination, I dutifully saved seeds at the end of the summer and had a shoebox full of baggies, all labeled with descriptions of the sunflower from which the seeds came, something like, "lemon yellow with dark face, 5'. I put a lot of time into this. What did I end up with? 90% of the seeds planted produced a multi-headed plain yellow sunflower, 5-7' tall. Not terrible, but not the striking wall of red sunflowers I had envisioned. The other 10% actually produced attractive multicolored orangey red flowers, but they were mixed in with all the others so you really couldn't enjoy them.

Last year I left the seeds for the birds and had lots of yellow finches visiting the yard, which I had yet to see in my urban Boston area. Better idea.

I've decided to spend the few bucks each year for new seeds and know what I'm actually going to get.

I wound up with many different sunflowers starting to bloom--and quickly. Very satisfied with these seeds! You do not need to have a green thumb. Just water regularly and let Mother Nature do the rest!

I love gardening, but I really suck at it. To illustrate: I have been unsuccessfully trying to grow bamboo for more than a year. But, I didn't give up! I got these seeds, and followed the directions, and walla!! They are growing! They are currently ranging in height from one centimeter to three inches! So, if you you love to garden but have a black thumb, have no fear! These seeds really grow! It's even my first time growing something from a seed! Happy gardening!

I received the packet and seeded 72 seeds in starter trays. I had a germination rate around 85% or so, as described by the seller. I transferred them outside kind of early as they sprouted quickly and shot up to 3-4 inches in about 10-14 days. The plants are doing well and are approaching 8-12 inches or so after about 3-4 weeks. I have some stragglers, but they all seem to be on track to being a pack of beauties.

-Update- 5-6 weeks post planting; Four of the germinated sunflowers are the shorter variety, the rest are anywhere from 4-5 feet tall. They are doing really well. Some of them are the type that have multiple staggered flower heads, it appears that is the majority of those dominating the crop right now. The blooms haven't opened yet, but I'm very satisfied and they are days to a week or two from exploding.

(I've added images over on the right)

The instructions on the seed packets says they don't like being transplanted, but my experience says they do.

I started 2 starter trays indoors and bought them outside during the days (and nights) when the weather was good, watering with warm water 3 times a day (in basic potting soil). My first sprouts arrived within 12 hours, others took 2 weeks. I saved half of the seeds to "direct sow".

I have a few directly sown seeds that have come up..maybe 4 plants. I sowed over 25 of them. Maybe 50.

The ones I started in starter trays are doing much better!

I transplanted them to ground or pots when they were about 4-5 inches tall and getting their second set of leaves. The ones in the pots are...okay, I guess. The ones I *transplanted* to ground are SUPER thriving. And like I said before, the seeds just stuck in the ground right off the bat are not even germinating, except for a few, which are small.

No matter what, the seeds themselves are definitely good. The germination rate for ones started indoors, watered with warm water 3 times a day, is well over 80%.

I'm in the North Mississippi area, if anyone wonders. My soil in the ground has some clay, but it's not SUPER heavy with it.

I will admit i have the opposite of a green thumb. So out of 100 seeds I only got about 10 sunflowers, how ever this is USER ERROR. I am sure they all or most would have survived if I was a better gardener. The ones that did come up were glorious! So beautiful. Some grew over 7 feet tall. They were beautiful. I am re-ordering for this year - and I am determined to get more to live!

Looking forward to the results of this mix of sunflowers. One suggestion, I did not read in the description originally that these are a mix of 18" to 24" sunflowers. If it is, you may want to play it up a bit. Great fun regardless and can't wait!!!! :)
