I purchased these Bhut Jolokia seeds along with some White Lightning Habanero seeds approximately 5 weeks ago to give myself a chile pepper challenge for the garden this year. My advice to any prospective buyers is to know what you are getting yourself into in terms of care for this variety of pepper. Some resources state that Bhuts can take several weeks to even germinate, this is typically due to the grower not providing the ideal conditions for this pepper.

Bhuts need a soil temperature of 26'C(80'F) or greater to really get a solid start and thrive (although they will eventually grow under cooler conditions). To get mine started I purchased a seedling starter heat mat and a seedling starter tray with cover. I used bagged potting soil that I had baked at 94'C(200'F) for 4 hours to completely sterilize it and help offset any mold issues. Before planting, I soaked the seeds in a warm, damp paper towel for 2 hours to soften the seed coat. I used peat seedling trays in the seedling starter kit; planting 1 seed per tray and covering each with 1cm (about 1/4 inch) of loose soil. Using a spray mister, I kept the soil moist but not wet by re-applying a few sprays to each planting 2-3 times a day. For a few hours in the evenings I would remove the seedling starter plastic cover and allow natural air currents to keep things from getting stagnant. Your biggest enemy here is having mold get started in the seedling tray. I should note at this point that lighting is not important; only after the seedlings come up and put on their first leaves should you worry about illumination.

Under the above conditions, every single one my Bhuts sprouted in 6 days. The Bhut seedlings look very much like habaneros at this stage with slightly broader, rounder leaves.

We started about 15 varities of peppers from seeds. A couple (purchased elsewhere) weren't what they said they were, that happens alot with the really hot, trendy ones. These were the real deal. I tried the teeny tiniest sliver of a piece and thought my tongue was melting... literally. I thought when I looked at it, it would look all drippy and melted! The guys have fun with it though, and it's funny to watch them squirm because they're too manly to drink milk! : )

My dad is a master gardener and a practical joker. I knew that I wanted these seeds for him and only wanted them straight from the source. They were inexpensive and arrived quickly. It has been 6 months since he planted them and they are big and healthy. I am very happy with my perfect, yet inexpensive purchase.

I give this a 1 because out of the seeds we planted only one grew and it died, I'm sure it dying was due to a watering error but more of the seeds should have sprouted.

They sent the wrong seeds. Save you're time and work by going to a better seed company. You might pay more but will save by now growing "red bomb chili peppers" instead of Ghost peppers that I ordered.

I've never grown anything from seeds before. But so far these are working out great! Planted 10 seeds, each in a separate little starter cup made of peat moss. Eight of them germinated and are now about 2" tall with 3-4 leaves. 80% seems good! Took three weeks before any progress was seen, so I was worried at first. Probably would have been more if I hadn't forgotten to water them for a couple days after eruption, and hadn't buried them so deep (1").

If you have a bonus room or similar area of the house that gets very hot, that's the place to start these. If you don't have that, perhaps try your car parked in the sun?

I received the seeds quickly, and followed the directions included for sprouting the seeds. I got 19 out of 20 to sprout. Most of them where sprouting between one and two weeks, one of them took about a month. Now, about two months later, they are nearly big enough to transplant outdoors.
