Product Description

One of the most unusual plants grown and a real curiosity for children. This tender perennial is often grown as a houseplant curiosity. When the attractive, finely cut leaflets are touched or otherwise disturbed, the leaves and branched will drop and fold up with astonishing speed and quickly expand again. Leaves fold up at night. Plants produce small "silk tree" blossoms. Plant: Indoor planting in pots or planters may be made any month of the year. Transplant carefully to 4" (10cm) pots and grow where there is bright light. Outdoors, select sunny location and sow in fine soil after all danger of frost is past. Care: Avoid over watering. Tip: As plants get older, cut back to a height of about 2" (5cm) and fresh growth will appear.

I read others comments saying the seeds didn't germinate, but I think mine is due to my new green thumb ;-) I planted 6 seeds in each of 6 pods for a total of 36 seeds. I had them on top of my radiator which is an even 74 degrees of heat. I had 2 phillips plant/aquarium bulbs in a floruescent fixture about 8 inches above them. The light is on from 8am to Midnight. Out of the seeds I planted I yielded 8 plants.

I tried to upload a video, but amazon won't allow me to upload from my iPhone, so if this works here is the link to it on youtube -[...]

Well, my purchase of 50 seeds has yielded over 500 plants now including the offspring. Not bad for a buck eighty.

I planted all of the seeds in the packet in one tray, applied heat from below with a seed germination mat, and covered the flat with a plastic lid. Five seeds germinated and two of those did not root. I have a flat with three plants and the rest of the pods are empty. I seeded approximately two to four seeds per pod so edge effects and inter-pod differences in climate control are very unlikely since not one pod germinated more than one seed. I.E. if it were a climate control problem any pod that produced 1 germinated seed should have seen germination from every seed in that pod. This was not the case. I had two germinated at pods on the edge of the flat and three in the middle of the flat. Two of the middle plants did not root.

I did not check to see if there was PLS (pure live seed) test results on the product description. I won't purchase seed without a PLS test again.

I might be inexperienced but I have tried several different methods to try and grow this plant with much success. The only reason they get four stars is even though the seeds germinated the seedlings have yet to live past a few weeks. I'll try changing my methods. Happy growing.

I have one of these plants that I planted 2 years ago, which I'm told is longer than most people report keeping them going. I wanted to add more seedlings to the pot in case my current plant doesn't make it much longer. The plant folds up and "goes to sleep" when you touch it, blow on it, or when it's dark or on a really overcast, rainy day. Kids love these, and they're great to tuck into teacher gifts too. I still remember my 3rd grade teacher having a fairly sizable one of these plants in our classroom(I'm 45 now), and we all loved to touch it and see how long it took to open back up(usually just a minute or two). There are websites you can go to that will answer questions and give you educational ideas for the plants, if you do an online search.

These are super easy to sprout. I put them in a plastic bag with a napkin and it sprouted after a few days. They are currently in some soil and growing slowly but surely.
