tired and lives in Santa Ana, California with his wife Sheila. They have four children and three are physicians and the other is studying for her Ph.D. in English literature at Cornell. This is Dr. Gazzaniga's second novel. He is also an Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of California, Irvine.
Tony "Lefty" Santori headed Boston's most notorious crime family. Along with his brother, Gianni, he had influence in commerce, politics, and law enforcement.
In short, Tony was a powerful man, both feared and revered by the citizens of the city. Lately, however, he seemed to be losing his grip on his business and on his personal life. All wasn't well in Tony's world.
Paulie Strata was Tony Santori's right-hand man. He took care of all the pesky details that cropped up in a business like theirs. Known as a "handler", Paulie prided himself on being able to handle anything asked of him. Lately, though, Paulie felt over-worked and under-appreciated. Having slaved so long for Tony, he sometimes felt like the tail wagging the dog.
Lenny DeGrazie, or Fat Lenny, was the son of Tony and Gianni's only sister. Lenny was fat, lazy and stupid... and dangerous to the Santori organization. Paulie warned Tony repeatedly to keep Lenny out of the family business, but Tony insisted Paulie take Lenny along whenever a job required a little extra "muscle". In Paulie's opinion, Lenny was a loose cannon who could very well destroy all he...okay, they had worked for.
As for Lenny, he was sick and tired of being known as Fat Lenny, the Santori's idiot nephew. He had some ideas of his own and it was time he tried them out.
Maria Santori was Tony's long-suffering wife who knew her place in Tony's life. After finally producing a long-awaited son, their marriage settled into a comfortable routine. Even after the murder of her father and her son's accident, Maria felt secure in her marriage and her family.
She felt secure until Tim Graves was killed, and then Maria cracked. Now, locked away in an institution, not even Tony can break through her self-imposed exile.
Despite his mother's illness, Joey Santori was on top of the world. A superb athlete, he was the star pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and on the brink of an unparalleled baseball career- a career nearly cut short by a blow to the head by a hard-hit ball. Thankfully, the extraordinary skills of the medical team at University Hospital saved Joey's life. He was now fully recovered and back playing baseball.
But there were problems for Joey that seemed to be getting worse every day. How long could he keep looking the other way when his dad's name appeared regularly in the local paper?
Meanwhile, at the Medical School, Dr. Luther Kennedy, was embroiled in a scandal involving his Department Chairman. Luther's brother Patrick, a homicide detective for the Boston Police Department, was assigned by Chief Danny Rastellini to investigate the death of one of their officers while awaiting a heart transplant.

This review is from: The Seeds We Sow (Paperback)
Gazzaniga writes refreshingly, without the hindrances of Writer's Digest sylists who insist upon format rather than story. This book actually has a story and it's good. A great read when you are looking for that next book. Would also be a great book club book.
