Book Description

It's senior year, and someone's declared open season on bullies.

From advanced classes to college entrance essays to baking cakes, Brenna Rutherford's got a lot on her plate with the start of her senior year. The last thing she needs to worry about is the pipe-wielding maniac causing chaos on campus. But after getting a little too close for comfort to the violence, Brenna, along with her best friend, Van Vaughn, is determined to find out who's responsible. Is it pathetic, much-abused Benny McBride; arrogant Cameron Irby, Brenna’s intellectual foe; or someone much closer to her? One thing is for certain – Brenna and Van must uncover the truth and stop the angry villain before the unthinkable occurs.

Seeing Red is the first in a seven-book series for young adults based on the seven deadly sins. In 2012, it won second place in the Gotham Writers' Workshop Young Adult Novel Discovery Contest.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A high school descends into violence, panic and unsettled grudges in Shepherd's debut novel. Dripping with allusions to current events, the plot is smart, gripping and scarily realistic, with a true twist ending. The end of the work doesn't completely tie up the story, leaving room for another needed, and deserved, novel. A thrilling, unsettling novel about the secrets of a small town." - Kirkus Indie Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new book by a great new author! January 12, 2013
By Jackie
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book from the moment I opened it! It was very well written, suspenseful, and fun. It is also appropriate for the age group it is written for. This book sucks you in from the beginning and I found myself very invested in the the characters. I am really excited to have found a young adult author that has the talent to write a great book without having to rely on provocative material to make the book interesting. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to read the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read December 29, 2012
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed reading new author Ann K. Shepherd's first novel, SEEING RED, a mystery that will keep you in suspense until the last page. The first in a series based on the seven deadly sins, this book is based on the sin of wrath, and these characters display no shortage of it. Ms. Shepherd plays on your emotions as she's created characters that you'll both despise and sympathize with at the same time. While the heroine, Brenna Rutherford, is a person that any young girl can look up to and emulate. This was a fast-paced, fun read. I'm looking forward to February 2013 with anticipation when the next Ann K. Shepherd novel in this mystery series is released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing Red review January 1, 2013
Format:Paperback
I love a good mystery and pride myself on being able to predict the outcome. Seeing Red kept me entertained and guessing until the reveal. I especially enjoyed the inner turmoil of the author's heroine, Brenna Rutherford. Not everything is black and white. Ann K. Shepherd gives an excellent depiction of someone coming to terms with their own strengths and weaknesses as they come face to face with the horrifying actions of others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! January 2, 2013
By PSW
Format:Paperback
I love mysteries and Ann K. Shepherd's first book, Seeing Red, kept me on pins and needles. I can't wait for the rest of the series! Her characters, especially Brenna Rutherford and best friend, Van Halen Vaughn, are terrific. I loved some of the twists and turns as the mystery developed and the reveal was a surprise, with yet another twist at the very end! I'm telling all my friends about this good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for #2! January 1, 2013
By Kristen
Format:Paperback
I love good writing almost as much as I love a good plot...and this book delivered both. The character development was solid, and no time was wasted on superfluous, irrelevant subplots. After reading through the book in one sitting (I just had to know who did it), I'm looking forward to re-reading Seeing Red before the second Brenna Rutherford book comes out!
