Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A change of perspective can facilitate startling changes in our thinking, even about everyday matters. When the new vantage point is outer space, and the object regarded is our own planet, the possibilities are breathtaking indeed. Lauber has compiled stunning photographs of the Earth taken by astronauts and images compiled from satellite data. She prompts the reader to consider not only their beauty but their significance to an understanding of Earth's evolution. Detailing the ways in which scientists use such images to track storm systems, predict weather and study crop conditions, Lauber pays particular attention to evidence of the environmental changes that humans have wrought. To this end, she offers involved but clear interpretations of infrared pictures of the Arctic's ozone hole and a radar impression of a long-buried Sahara riverbed. This is an unusual and thought-provoking book: it offers the magical sight of the Earth as a distant, luminous orb, and makes a resonant plea to treasure this precious planet. Ages 10-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book!, March 13, 2005
A Kid's Review
The book shows a lot of unusual picture showing our planet. It made me understand the Earth more easier while I'm reading the facts written in the book. Also, because of the great picture on the book, it made it more fun and interesting to read. The book also, asked the readers to help our planet live by taking care of the environment which makes it a great and good book.
I have learned a lot. I hope that make a new one with newer picture in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing Earth From Space is awesome, May 31, 2000

Seen from space this Earth appears so very small & fragile, with a thin shell of atmosphere. With breathtaking illustrations we soar above the world & are given a god's eye view. With watershed photos taken predominantly by NASA from the Apollo missions & the Space Shuttle, this author has written a wondrous tour guide to the heavens. Awesome & fun! A must. END
