Mark Hunneman, an ordained Presbyterian minister, while recuperating from some health issues, began watching "Ghost Hunters" and other paranormal investigation programs, both with fascination and alarm. Observing the recent explosion of interest in ghosts and the supernatural, as evidenced in books, TV, and movies, he questioned how a belief in ghosts coincided with traditional Christianity, where the Bible stood on the existence of ghosts, and why God would allow ghosts to exist.

Hunnemann's investigation led him to reading and analyzing popular books by people who claim they can talk to ghosts, including Mary Ann Winkowski, to interviewing religious demonologists who seek to exorcise demons, and to watching numerous episodes of paranormal investigation programs and popular fictional shows such as "Ghost Whisperer" to understand popular--and misguided--beliefs about ghosts. Mark even relates that he has had his own frightening encounters with the supernatural world. This array of research led him to some strong conclusions.

Far beyond simply compiling evidence of the supernatural, Hunnemann applied common sense and logic, and most importantly, his own Christian beliefs as sifted through the Bible to answer the hard questions about whether ghosts exist, and if so, why. Hunnemann examines most significantly the biblical worldview of life, man's place in the world, and what kind of God would permit people--even babies--to become ghosts. His well-reasoned analysis is centered upon answering seven biblical worldview questions: 1) What is the Nature of God? 2) What is Your Purpose in Life? 3) What is the Nature of Reality? 4) What is the Nature of History? 5) What is the Basis for Morality? 6) What are the Essential Traits of Being Human? and 7) What Happens to Us After We Die?

A harmless entertainment? Not hardly! Mark makes short work of any view of this ghost chasing trend as harmless. He takes us off the sofa and into the truth behind the shows. That this trend is not good and that Christians - especially parents and pastors - should be very concerned is the "Yeah duh!!" of the book. BUT, it's the biblical foundation and way-points Mark leads is through and to that are critical. His weaving together of sound theology and modern gullibility (especially on the part of the Church) is just short of overwhelming.

This is not one of those "bad dog, bad bad dog," kind of books that seeks to tickle our curiosity and arouse our interest in the subject. This is a bold and well stated warning, to anyone who will read it, that there is grave (no pun) danger in playing with ghosts. But we're too sophisticated to worry about ghosts - right? Demons are entities of fiction or long ago - certainly nothing to worry about in these heady days of facebook and instant messaging not to mention space travel and cloning.

Mark's book exposes our "itching ears" and how easily we're lulled into allowing into our homes - even our children's bedrooms - the seeds of evil. How far is it from entertaining demons to living out their doctrine? Mark lays out the temptations and dangers of this latest fad. You may say, "
At least it's not senseless violence or pornography," and you'd be right. It is however the distraction of those (violence and pornography) that make it so easy for us to poo-poo the very idea of demonic stealth attacks.

Well written and biblically sound this work is a must for every believer - especially pastors and parents. Ignore it at not only your peril but that of those for whom you are responsible.

Mark Hunnemann has done a great service to the Christian church. "Seeing Ghosts through God's Eyes" is an in depth analysis of "earth bound spirits' as seen through the lens of Biblical glasses. His logical reasoning based on rock solid Christian doctrine is the best review of this issue in print. I found the book very helpful in both understanding the "ghost" phenomena and a excellent review of Biblical doctrine. I recommend this book to both believers and unbelievers to know how Christians should view the "ghost" interest in our culture. Thanks Mark for some excellent work!!!

The book brought up some good points that I had considered before, namely that spirits are either demonic in nature or spirits separated from God in a hellish existence. The author depended a bit too much on Biblical truth to convince spiritualists though. If they don't accept the truth of the Bible, then they won't accept a Biblical worldview. As an Orthodox Christian, I am also not very enthusiastic about the concept of "religious demonologist" that the author seems to put quite a bit of faith in. I checked out some of the "demonologist" web sites that the author talks about but could find little that qualified them to do spiritual warfare with the "powers of the air'.
Mostly I bought this book for my brother who considers himself a "ghost investigator". I doubt that he will be convinced by the Biblical arguments though.
