Dense with imagery and fully hallucinatory,

Not knowing really what to expect in this book, at the very beginning it takes a little while to figure out that there are two different voices and that the story is happening in two different times. And then for a while it appears it might be just a story about failed young love: "Boy meets girl. Sparks fly. Nothing happens," as one of the characters says, summing it up at one point.But the poetry of the language grows on you as you go along and there's something mysterious and poignant that emerges from the overlay of misplaced facts and their imperfect recreation in recollection. The more earnestly the narrative works to resolve the past in fine grain, the more inconcrete it proves in the present. Dense with imagery and fully hallucinatory by the end, what else could you ask for from a love story? |
