Schatz's photographic portraits book confirm that redheads come in all shapes, sizes, genders, stylistic modes, etc. The photography is excellent, showing the portrait genre of the medium as an intellectual endeavor as he places light, hair, face and (some) form in ways that make these redheads seem like brand-new visual discoveries. The value of this work is the quality of its images, not its theme, but it is a better visual journey through red hair and the faces that anchor it than Joel Meyerowitz's Redheads ( LJ 11/1/91). This is an excellent book of photography. As a converted redhead, I fully appreciate Schatz's subject matter. Anyone with auburn, strawberry-blond, carrot, copper, or even ronald mcdonald-colored hair should own a copy of this book. I supposed the blondes and brunettes can have one too, but only after the redheads are covered.

This is one of two redhead books I bought. I liked the other one much better (Redheads by Uwe Ditz). For me, this one was too artsy and soft-porny with nudity shots. I wanted something I could put on my coffee table, that I would be OK with having Grandma thumb through. This was not that book.

I'm a huge fan of Howard Schatz's work, and I've got a soft spot for red heads. This probably isn't his best collection, but if you're a fan of Schatz and red heads, you'll probably like this.
