Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sale, author of Seattle, Past to Present (1976) and several other books about Seattle, has teamed up with nationally known photographer Randlett to create a unique guide. Seeing Seattle provides 26 walking tours, ranging from 40 minutes to three hours, which take the tourist downtown through residential neighborhoods, parks, forests, hills, and beaches, all the while focusing on the history, architecture, and individuality of each area. Written in a conversational tone, this guide is best used by carrying it along on the tour. Although several photos are included, the actual sites must be seen to make the text meaningful. This book is not for everyone; rather, it is geared more toward those who prefer to go it alone and observe the city in a way most people never see.?Lucille Corbo, MLS, Scranton, Pa.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for tourists and nontourists, January 24, 2000

My wife and I really enjoyed using this book. Walks on Capital Hill to Magnolia to Pioneer Square revealed many things that we did not take the time to notice before.

Our favorite was probably Capital Hill, it tooks us about 3.5 hours to complete and we've done it many times since.

Roger Sale was one of my many English professors at UW-Seattle 20 years ago and I can see his personality coming out in this book. Whether one is new to Seattle or has lived there for a number of years, this book is a good one for identifying good places to get out and stroll through charming neighborhoods or other beautiful parts of the city. His chapter on the University of Washington is intriguing. I have been to many college campuses around the nation, but have yet to visit one that surpasses the beauty of UW. I moved away from Seattle about 13 years ago and now live in Olympia, but I still enjoy taking my family to Seattle on Sundays. A stroll on UW is particularly enjoyable in early April when the cherry blossoms in the quad are at peak -- it's amazing how many tourists are on campus to take in the beauty. One thing Prof. Sale didn't mention is that a walk to Husky Stadium from main campus or the Burke Gilman is unlike any other big-football university on the west coast in the early fall. It provides more of a Big-10 than a Pac-10 atmosphere. Truly enjoyable. The one thing that could have enhanced this book would have been colored pics over black and white.
