Students Love It,
By Richard N. Bentley "moses" (amherst, ma USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seeing and Writing 3 (Paperback)
I've assigned my students a book review of Seeing & Writing as part of an "argument essay" at Western New England College. Early drafts seem to indicate that almost all of the students "enjoyed" the book (a strange verb for a textbook.) They were not unaware of its flaws, however, especially the absence of hardly any authors born before 1950, and the triviality of many of the essays. Some found the illustrations "too numerous" and of "doubtful relevance" to the essays and stories.
The final essays aren't in yet. Stay tuned.

Be Warned--A Terrible Composition Textbook,
By Trace Bearden "Trace Bearden" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seeing and Writing 3 (Paperback)
No one has commented on this book but I feel obligated to warn college instructors and professors who might consider the use of this textbook. Quite simply, don't. This is the fourth introduction to composition text I've used and by far the worst. Although sleek looking and extremely usable, the readings are terrible; shallow, short, and redundant. The book aims to incorporate multiple literacies into the composition classroom, an idea I like and still think potentially fruitful. But "Seeing and Writing" never goes beyond putting a photo next to and essay and saying "compare." If the essays had any rhetorical or intellectual richness this might not be such a bad idea. But my students rarely find much to say about these essays, usually astute enough to note the obviousness of most of the writing.
Some of my colleagues have claimed the book panders to contemporary students, which I find unfair. However, it most certainly underestimates them.

FINE TEXT,
This review is from: Seeing and Writing 3 (Paperback)
Thoughtful book! Some images are unforgettable - and students DO like it.
It makes them think and evaluate and analyze. The "cartoon-style" essay is probing and a great read. Also, the idea of morphing a lot of women's faces and coming out with the classic beauty was amazing! You'll SEE! -\-\-\-\- Tim Bellows - on Amazon.com

Everything was great about this transaction. I asked the person I was buying this from to send this to me asap and they did which was great because my class had already started and I was worried I wouldnt have the book in time. The book was in optimum condition. I will buy from this person again in the future.

I can see and write now.,

This review is from: Seeing and Writing 3 (Paperback)
I bought this book for a writing class. It taught me to be more observant-sort of, and helped me to write with greater ease- kind of. I saw, I wrote. I wrote about what I saw. My teacher saw what I wrote about. I think I improved my level of observation too much, because now I look very critically at everything. It ruining my life. I can't get anything done at all, with my eyes taking so much time staring at one thing. I've become like some freakin' zombie now. But that only serves as a testament to the effectiveness of this here book. You will be looking at things in a whole new way. I'm more alert to my surrounding now. Perhaps paranoid. This book made me a schitzo. People now look at me like I'm a psychotic fool. I don't know whether to recommend this book or tell you to pass on this one. It was a good book. Buy it now. And see for yourself. You'll see things in a new light. But don't study too hard, it might drive you crazy.
