Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5^-10. Like their An Ancient Heritage: The Arab American Minority (1991), Ashabranner and Conklin's latest photo-essay takes us into the world of a little-known American minority. Once again, the words and portraits bring us close to all kinds of individuals behind the prevailing stereotype. There is some information about the boat people and the poor and desperate who survive as farm laborers and unskilled city workers; but the book's focus is on the middle class, especially the well-educated families who came here as legal immigrants in the 1950s and 1960s to escape the cruel dictatorship in Haiti. After a brief history of Haiti, a lively chapter looks at the vital community of Little Haiti in Miami. There is a special section on successful Haitian American artists. In all the success stories and smiling family portraits of doctors, teachers, and businesspeople, there is a strong sense of connection with their roots as well as commitment to their community. There is also a clear connection with all the "foreigners" who have come seeking the American dream and who have strengthened and enriched their adopted homeland. Hazel Rochman
