Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this series starter, a companion to the wildly popular Seeker books, Hunter picks up after the death of the bear Ujurak in an avalanche. The remaining three bears, mourning the loss of their friend, begin the long journey home. Toklo, a brown bear; Lusa, a small black bear; and Kallik, a polar bear are accompanied by Yakone, another polar bear they met on Star Island. Toklo, in particular, misses his friend and is grumpy and difficult. Ujurak, now a starbear, appears to Lusa and Kallik in dreams, encouraging them to “remember what matters most.” The bears encounter great hardship, making their way eventually onto a large island where they encounter a young bear who was driven out by his family. Toklo, sure that the cub has been sent by Ujurak, is determined to protect him. Nanulak’s parents are a polar bear and a brown bear, and the young bear is deeply angry over his “mixed” status, bringing intense discord to the group that threatens to divide them completely. The bears’ journey has only just begun, and clearly there will be many more volumes. Reflecting the realities of the natural world, this new adventure will be greeted with delight by fans of the series. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Extensive marketing efforts, including companion websites, social media outreach, and online games, will likely expand the already vast fan base for Hunter’s series. Grades 5-8. --Lynn Rutan

Just finished reading this so its more fresh off my mind. The book is pretty good. We start to see a relationship between Yakone and Kallik (great pair) and a new character, Nalulak. I found it interesting that the Authors mentioned brown bears and polar bears living together, not something i was aware of. I'm guessing it happens in the wild as well? Anyway, i don't want to reveal anything more, just buy it. But if you are new to the Seekers series i recommend starting from the first book, "The Quest Begins".

Also, the next book according to amazon and other online retailers is coming in 6/5/12 so that's something to look forward to. I just hope this series doesn't become like the warriors, and feel sorta worn out. I still read the warriors but don't buy them any more. It just feels like the Erins are re-bundling ideas and milking the series along. But that's just my opinion.

I loved this book! The only problem with it: it was so good I read it too fast! I'm anticipating the next book in the series. Note: You can't just jump in the series, read this book, and expect to know what's going on. The book says,"Book 1", but really it's book one of the second series in Seekers. So you have to read the first series of books before you can read this one, otherwise, you'll be totally lost!

The Seekers series is not just for kids. It has been a relaxing pleasure to follow the lives of Toklo, Kallick ans Lusa on their journey. These books and this story beats the tar out of all the unwholesome filthy things on the market. Life is too short to read junk. Be positive and read The Seekers Series.

First Sentence: Excitement tingled through Lusa's paws as she padded down the snow-covered beach.

How I Acquired the Book: I borrowed this book from a library in a town which I was visiting. My friend let me use her library card.

The Review *spoilers from first six books beyond this point*: When I finished reading Spirits in the Stars last year, I was amazed at how, well, amazing it was. And I was happy that the Seekers series had reached such a brilliant ending. So when Erin Hunter announced the release of this new beginning to the NEXT Seekers series, I was a bit hesitant to try it.

Turns out, my fears were completely unfounded! This new series starter makes the previous one, The Quest Begins, look like it was written by a 5-year old. Lusa, Kallik, and Toklo are better characters than I ever could have imagined when starting this book. Plus, there are two new characters that join the three, and that makes for an interesting read. In the aftermath of Spirits in the Stars, one bear was killed, and the mystery surrounding him begins to be unveiled. Yes, you read that correctly, even though Ujurak's dead, we still get to see him in the bears' dreams.

The plot is much better than your average Seekers book. I thought I'd outgrown the simple language and plot in the Seekers books, but I think it's gone the other way around--with its heavy themes such as racism and overall messages to the reader, Seekers has outgrown me! There's plenty of action and suspense in Island of Shadows. I did take off a star, however, because I don't believe Ms. Hunter is that good at showing, and not telling. There were various occasions when she /told/ us about the characters' emotions rather than showing them.

I love this book because it has a great storyline and I think Erin Hunter is a genius for coming up with Seekers in the first place. I think this book deserves five stars. My favorite character in the book is Kallik- like it is in every Seekers book- because she has an amazing personality, kind and generous, and I love polar bears. I also really like Lusa! Yakone is a cool twist in the story too. many people think that this is the first Seekers book, but the first book is The Quest Begins, which is also awesome. If you like this series I highly recommend the Warriors series- which most people already read first- which is about cats, and the Survivors series, which is about dogs. I recommend this book to people who like adventure and action. This book has a lot. Don't forget to look out for the manga books for Seekers!

I love animal stories. I really liked the Ga'Hoole books, so I decided to add this series to my Kindle too. I have yet to start it, but I am looking forward to reading all of Erin Hunter's books.
