Book Description

July 20, 2009
SEEKING THE HOOK, New & Selected Poems, published in 1997, contains poems from Lou Lipsitz two previous books, COLD WATER and REFLECTIONS ON SAMSON as well as eight-five pages of new work. The new poems are especially focused on exploring aspects of the male emotional experience - including the struggle to acknowledge depth of feeling, coming to terms with loss, being able to carry the weight of grief and to find use for the fires of rage. Some poems ask how to deal with the wounds one has received and also the wounds one has inflicted, knowingly or not. As Robert Bly described the poet’s position in these new poems: “He’s in the boat along with crazy Hungarian aunts and Brooklyn grandfathers, but he’s also in the water more and more, a large fish looking for the hook of truth.” The clear exploratory honesty of the poems, led George Hitchcock to say”the best of them are the equal of anything now being written in America.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This man's poems keep getting better...He's in the boat along with crazy Hungarian aunts and Brooklyn grandfathers, but he's also in the water more and more, a large fish longing for the hook of truth." --Robert Bly

"These are poems of clarity, wit and passion. The best of them are the equal of anything now being written in America...Lou Lipsitz has again turned out splendid and evocative work." --George Hitchcock

"The new poems are bolder and fresher than anything he accomplished before. Part of the freshness is his imagery. The fishhook of the title poem is a 'beautiful lie' too powerful for the fish to resist...Seeking the Hook is a remarkable comeback from a poet who obviously never went away. It's a book that was well worth the wait." --Robert Phillips

"Lou Lipsitz is a poet and practicing psychotherapist who has written with an acute consciousness of men's issues for many years...In poems spanning over 30 years, SEEKING THE HOOK demonstrates the depth and power of Lipsitz honesty and toughness...his story- telling, self-knowledge and lack of naivete..." --Dragonsmoke, journal of the
men's movement

About the Author

Lou Lipsitz has published three books of poems, a political play, a textbook on American politics, and articles and reviews in the field of psychotherapy. Born in Brooklyn, he moved to North Carolina where, for thirty years, he taught political science in Chapel Hill. He left academics to become a psychotherapist, specializing in men's issues and life transitions. Throughout this time he has continued writing and publishing poetry. His poems have been widely anthologized and used in teaching literature. He was recipient of an NEA Writer's Grant and won the Allen Ginsburg prize in 2002. His newer poems take a more psychological perspective on personal development and family relationships. His writing is characterized by a searching personal honesty, a trenchant boldness, and a good bit of unexpected humor. Most of all, his images and surprising twists remain with the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lou Lipsitz's powerful poems go straight to the heart, April 6, 1999
By A Customer
This collection of poems is refreshing and speaks to a wide range of human emotions. You'll find yourself laughing at "The Blackberry Authorities," wincing at "Seeking the Hook" and crying at "Separation." Lipsitz's poetic descriptions of growing up in Brooklyn are humorous and heartwarming. This is my favorite collection of poetry. And best of all, I CAN UNDERSTAND IT :-) (How refreshing!) I just found out it is available through the Duke University Press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading..., September 5, 2003
By A Customer
Lou Lipsitz has a wonderful gift for transforming deeply-felt emotions into colorful imagery, often profound and sometimes humorous. His work is accessible in that I feel that shock of recognition that comes whenever I see my own deep feelings captured by another, but also quite unique and surprising--he takes those feelings to places I have never been...
