Great Collection of Essays, January 1, 2010
This review is from: Seeking and Soaring: Jewish Approaches to Spiritual Direction (Paperback)
Rabbi Milgram has collected some great essays and articles on the subject of "Jewish Approaches to Spiritual Direction." There are eight sections covering topics such as techniques, ethics, meditation, storytelling, and applying these techniques to groups and communities. Thirty people contributed to this volume including, to mention just a few, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Rabbi Marcia Prager, Rabbi Rami Shapiro, and Rabbi David Zaslow.
The essays are generally thoughtful, helpful, and of high quality. Some are profound and worthy of repeated re-readings. The variety of articles makes this a helpful reference work. Topics include: creating sacred space, integrating story telling, a systems theory approach to counseling, working with the dying, and reducing professional isolation for spiritual leaders.
Unfortunately, the production values of the book are not as good as the essays within it. The margins are narrow, there are many typographical errors, and the layout is haphazard. These problems detract from the reading experience and that's unfortunate because this is a book worth reading.
