Book Description

It may be Angel's wish...but it's Melinda's journey.
It's been two years since Angel learned the magic chip of wood inside her locket would grant any wish. What is taking her so long to choose?

An alarming discovery about her beloved foster brother Zack makes the decision easy...but everything else gets complicated after she runs into her old friend Melinda, who demands to go along for the return to Toch Island.

Melinda doesn't fit in with the magical freaks any more than she did with the losers back in Florida, but she never wanted to belong before. A secret world surrounds her where even the bugs have magic...She's more of an outsider than ever. So when ex-con Doran Ashe slinks out of the shadows and offers her an easy road to powers of her own, Melinda follows him despite--or maybe because of--everyone's warnings.

The sequel to young adult fantasy, Finding Angel.

Readers have compared her writing to that of Cornelia Funke and Madeline L'Engle.
Ideal for young teens, older teens, and anyone who loves adventure, mystery, fantasy and magic.

About the Author

Kat Heckenbach grew up in the small town of Riverview, Florida, where she spent most of her time either drawing or sitting in her "reading tree" with her nose buried in a fantasy novel...except for the hours pretending her back yard was an enchanted forest that could only be reached through the secret passage in her closet...
She never could give up on the idea that maybe she really was magic, mistakenly placed in a world not her own...but as the years passed, and no elves or fairies carted her away...she realized she was just going to have to create the life of her fantasies. She shares that life with her husband and two homeschooling kids.
Kat is a graduate of the University of Tampa, Magna Cum Laude, B.S. in Biology. She spent several years teaching, but never in a traditional classroom-everything from Art to Algebra II. Her writing spans the gamut from inspirational personal essays to dark and disturbing fantasy and horror, with over forty short fiction and nonfiction credits to her name.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as Finding Angel September 6, 2012

SEEKING UNSEEN
It may be Angel's wish...

MY THOUGHTS:
When I first started reading Seeking Unseen, the sequel to Finding Angel, my stomach was a nervous mess of butterflies (or maybe Nazguls, given how I felt). I loved Finding Angel so very much that I was afraid the sequel would let me down horribly.
I should've trusted Kat Heckenbach more than that.
Seeking Unseen started a little slow, but things began to pop when Angel's adopted brother Zach and friend Melinda join her on Toch Island. Seeing the island through Melinda's eyes was fun, and I loved how Horatio and Kalek both had bigger parts to play...especially Kalek.
Melinda's disobedience and acting out annoyed me, but I also completely understood her motivations for it and found her as believable as the rest of the characters. Ayden was a sweet addition to the group as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sequel That's Equal... January 18, 2014
Format:Paperback
If you enjoyed "Finding Angel" you won't be disappointed with this return to Toch Island. The author writes with easy self-assurance of her magical world, and the characters, both old and new, find their footing believably. Highly recommend both books and hope there is a third in the works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than book one April 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Seeking Unseen is even more wonderful, unique and unpredictable than Finding Angel, the book that preceded it. Ms Heckenbach is a highly skilled and creative author who writes stories that are perfect for younger teens since they are free of the heavy violence that infects so much of our fiction.

She adds some new characters and weaves a story with the same mix of magic and mystery as in Finding Angel, but with more complex character interactions. When Angel returns to her old town to find her little foster brother, Zack, she meets Melinda, a childhood friend, and daughter of Dawic, the evil mastermind of Finding Angel. Melinda pleads with Angel to take her back to the magical island with her, and Angel, sweet girl that she is, relents and takes her with them. However, Melinda is a complex character with a tendency towards negativity, so Angel and her mother and father have their hands full trying to assimilate her into the family and life in a magical world.

The drama revolves around, Doran, a boy thief who has been released from prison after four years. He behaves strangely, and Angel's parents, and the elven boy Kalek, don't trust him. Distrust, however, breeds more distrust, and when Melinda takes a shine to Doran, she feels she has to hide it from the others. I can't say too much about the story without giving away too much, just believe me when I say, that it's a good one, and with an unexpected ending in more ways than one.

Apart from the well-crafted nature of the book, I liked that Angel's parents were good parents. So often we see absent or poor parenting in YA books, so it was refreshing to see something more healthy and probably more realistic for a lot of kids. I also liked the way Angel handled Melinda, with intelligence and sensitivity.

Seeking Unseen was a great sequel to Finding Angel. One of the things I liked best about it was the dialogue and descriptions...well, and the characters....and the magic....and...
Ok, so I I really couldn't pinpoint what I liked best--everything was so amazing! First off, the plot was well-written and suspenseful. Kat did a wonderful job of continuing Angel's story, but also by starting the stories of new characters. So many times the sequel to a book falls short of what I expected, or else the characters head in a totally different direction than they seemed to be heading, but the story and characters in Seeking Unseen expanded in such a way that I was excited to learn more about them. The descriptions are beautiful also--I absolutely love spotting good descriptions (particularly about nature). In Seeking Unseen there was a perfect balance of description and dialogue. I love getting print copies of books, but the benefit of the Kindle version of this was that I could highlight, and highlight I did! :) The witty banter was amazing...if only I could memorize it and use it in my own conversations...
One of my favorite scenes was a scene where the main characters go to a carnival, and the things that were sold there (magic things) were absolutely drool worthy! For all fantasy lovers out there, here's a taste: Dragon rides, magic feathers that could come in any color and be placed on your skin like a tattoo, but could be removed, dresses that could become any size! I definitely wish all of those existed.
Probably the other thing I loved about this was the addition of a new main character, Melinda. She was such a new and interesting voice, especially when balanced with Angel's point of view.

Now she shares that life with her husband and two kids. Ok, maybe "share" isn't the right word--more like lives that life in her writing and tries her best to be normal the rest of the time...

The boring stuff:

She graduated from the University of Tampa--Magna Cum Laude, B.S. in Biology (yep, a science geek, too).

She spent several years teaching, but never in a traditional classroom--everything from Art to Algebra II (yep, a math geek, too)--and now she homeschools her two kids.

Her writing spans the gamut from inspirational personal essays to dark and disturbing fantasy and horror.

(You didn't honestly expect "romance" did you?)
