Wow! I've been using Moira Hodgson's cookbooks for years, as she always has a sensational new twist on the old standards that wins me raves at my dinner parties. And her restaurant reviews in the New York Observer newspaper are not only fun to read, they're also very reliable as she gets all the details right. So I was eager to read this book, and, no surprise here --- it's absolutely great! She makes you feel like you're on an exotic adventure with your new best friend, who just happens to be a tall, brilliant, gorgeous goddess. I stayed up all night to finish it. The only way it could have been better is if I'd been reading it while hurtling through the darkness on the Orient Express to parts unknown...

Moira Hodgson is the restaurant critic for the New York Observer and also writes cookbooks. But this is a memoir of her life as it relates to food. Her father was in the British Foreign Service so throughout her childhood she lived in far-flung places like Saigon, Berlin, New York, Mexico, and Morocco. The anecdotes of her encounters with exotic food are entertaining and the book is sprinkled with unusual recipes, "Elephant's Foot" and "Angels on Horseback" are two I'd like to try.

I'm amazed by restaurant critics who don't have weight problems. "At the end of six months, despite eating out every night and most lunchtimes, I had lost nearly ten pounds. In all that time of free food, although I tasted everything that was put before me, I don't believe I actually consumed an entire meal."

Entertaining and charming.

Having had the pleasure of hearing Moira read part of her book aloud at a booksigning, her delightfully lilting accent accompanied me as I escaped with her through memorable meals and unforgettable characters staccatoing her charmed and charming life. With a memory for dishes that defies time and logic, this celebrated world foodie takes your tastebuds on a journey full of spices and ingredients, not to mention the tantalizing companions with whom she has shared culinary pleasures along the way. From her childhood traveling the globe in style with her undercover espionage father, to the list of Who's Who dinner guests parading through her tiny Greenwich Village kitchen, this perfectly charming twisting of time, memoir, personality and gourmet sensations made me hunger for just one more perfectly poised Oyster Rockefeller with this charming raconteur.

Moira Hodgson has just joined Laurie Colwin as the author with whom I most enjoy imaginary cooking. I hope soon to actually cook several of the unusual and tasty-sounding recipes drawn from all corners of the globe that she includes in this food memoir. It is written with great wit and a brisk, true style. More than just a story of meals eaten and countries visited, it is also a delightful and memorable coming-of-age story, important without being self-important. Read it for fun.

I was thoroughly engaged, entertained, and most of all, enchanted, by "It Seemed Like A Good Idea at The Time: My Adventures in Life and Food" by Moira Hodgson. Wonderfully written, I found myself savoring recipes and adventures alike. This is an extraordinary life story brimming with passion and humor. I highly, highly recommend it!

I was disappointed in this memoir.

The first part of the book about her early life was interesting but as she went out I became irritated by its gossipy tone, the personal and unflattering information that she revealed about her family, and the recipes. I did not like any of the recipes and would never think of making them....too much sugar, cream and overwhelmingly unhealthy.

I really wanted to like this book. I gave it a good try. I just kept getting sidetracked because the book was not keeping my interest. I know that the author has led an interesting life with her travels and food experiences, I guess the way it was written just was not in a style to keep my mind on the book.

I thought this book would be more about food and restaurants. It's really about her entire life, written in a way my mother would probably enjoy.
