4.0 out of 5 stars Spend A Rainy Day Alone With Scout, January 22, 2000

Scout's lead singer is very Mazzy Starr-esque. Her low voice is enthralling and tends to put you in a trance. This album is perfect on those days when you just want to be alone with your thoughts. Scout's music draws you in with it's passion and intensity. Excellent first album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need, February 17, 2000

I finally figured out why I just can't stop listening to this record. There are so many records in my collection that have one or two great tunes. And then there are a few dozen perfect album sides. But there's a relatively short list of records that I can throw in the player without needing to keep the remote nearby to skip over the occasional dud. This record definitely makes that shortlist.

Whether it's the Beatle-esk pop tunes like "Let me down easy" and "Rumor" or sadder sweeter tunes like "On this perfect day" or "Clutch", all the songs hit the mark both in their own right and as an outstanding collection of tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Subtle, Poignant, AMAZING!, July 24, 2001

I picked up this album without ever having heard of the band before. I listened with growing interest as each song played and realized I had stumbled upon a priceless gem. This album will forever rank in my top 10.

For an initial album, this group has all the advanced music skills available at their fingertips to produce music of superb quality for years to come. Their ability leans toward the expression of poignant pain and the lure of love while avoiding the trite Gothic lets-all-just-die themes. "There I Go Now" is a beautiful love song that will bring the hardest man to tears in recalling an absent love.

Everyone I play this CD for loves it. Period. You absolutely cannot go wrong with this group.

Amazon has the track list for this CD wrong. The tracks listed here as of 12/11/07 are actually for This Soft Life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every once in a while, June 11, 2002
By A Customer

Every once in a while you find a hidden gem. Something you didn't count on that turned out to be gold. I stumbled on Scout when they appeared on HBO's The Sopranos. It took me a few days to actually find out who this enchanting band was (lead singer Ashen Keilyn in particular), but once I did... I just can't stop listening.

Scout is indeed a hidden gem discovered. The last group to take me by surprise like this was Book of Love, and that was over 15 years ago. Fifteen long years I've been waiting. Finally.

My recommendation... buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars #1 Best Quality, November 8, 2001

Gosh, what an album! I bought it after stumbling over a few of the mp3s available on the web. Every single song is great! Ashen Keilyn's voice is full of world-weary yearning, and her songwriting is unbelievably catchy without being simplistic. The guitar parts sound great, with a new hook at every turn. What style is it? Hmmm.... the Velvet Underground meets the Breeders, with a dash of Pete Droge thrown in?
You'll be humming these songs for weeks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best NYC Indie Band..., May 4, 2001
This review is from: It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time (Audio CD)
...and I've seen countless...(thanks Miss Black) This band swings! A cross between the fab four and "Live Through This". Get this album. It's a lot better than much of the stuff on rock radio, matter of fact it just don't compare. O tay

Great CD; I can't take it out of the player. The mix of good old hard rockin' and very catchy songwriting. Holds up very well to repeated listening. Warning: highly addictive.

4.0 out of 5 stars going places, August 16, 2001

The woman who fronts this band has one of the more interesting voices you'll hear. The original material is plenty good and I'm sure will only get better but their version of the Westerberg classic "unsatisfied" is killer. Add to that their appearance on "The Sopranos" as the "Miami Relatives," and I think we all can fill in the blanks on what's in store for the future of this band.
