About the Author

Mona N. Mikhail, author of the groundbreaking Images of Arab Women: Fact and Fiction and Studies in the Short Fiction of Mahfuz and Idris, is a professor of Arabic and comparative literature at New York University. She has won several awards, namely from PEN and Columbia University, for her translations. Her most recent work is the film documentary Live Onstage: A Century and a Half of Theater in Egypt.

This is a timely and much needed work to better understand the role and status of women in contemporary arab society. It gives great insight into contemporary culture and the writings of leading arab authors. A must!!
