1.0 out of 5 stars Self Destructs - Difficult Battery Replacement
I have owned 2 and both self-destructed. The first lasted long enough to require a battery replacement (probably 20 openings) which was almost impossible due to the design. That one broke a plastic part shortly thereafter. The second jar opener self-destructed on the 5th jar. The same plastic part broke on it which indicates an inherent weakness in the design and...

5.0 out of 5 stars As Advertised, February 15, 2008

When my mom asked me to install a manual jar opener, I mentioned a manual one would not be that helpful to her and suggested we look for an electric. As a lifetime member of The Church of Appliantology, I naturally was leaning toward the powerful and intimidating countertop Black & Decker model, but due to counter space limitations we agreed to try this little battery unit first. I was seriously skeptical, but after a few test runs I was sold. For what it does for the price, five stars.

This vid was all I had time to shoot, and only on one jar. You can see it is a little slow, but relentless. The battery cover is indeed odd, but once you've done it it's no big deal- the batteries slide in slightly angled instead of parallel, maybe that's what confused folks. I doubt this opener will see daily use, so it would be difficult to gather any long-term reliability or battery life info, but after a short period with this device I am tempted to pick one up specifically for that purpose. Plus, it works well, is fun to watch, and I am discovering as I age it seems that they are indeed putting on the lids a lot tighter!

UPDATE 02-16-10: After two years of continuous service, I regret to inform my readers the opener finally broke- the rack assembly that is part of the gripper arm snapped. Impossible to repair, but for the original price, I think that's a pretty good lifespan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool, November 15, 2007
This thing is really cool. Although it's not fast it works really well with everything I've tried it on. It's amazing how much power it has.
So far it's kept my wife from saying "Will you open this for me please?"
The only reason I haven't rated it a 5 is because I haven't used it that long and can't attest to it's longevity. It appears solid and well built and, if it lasts, then it's a five.

5.0 out of 5 stars IT WORKS...ONE HANDED!!!!, December 8, 2007

The hardest part of using this is putting in the batteries. I bought one to see if it would work for someone that only has use of one hand, one arm (i.e. stroke patient) IT WORKS... I tried it (single handed) on one of those short chopped garlic jars, and on a taller pasta sauce jar. It worked great on both. I can only hope it continues to do so. I wish I had more jars to open.

1.0 out of 5 stars Self Destructs - Difficult Battery Replacement, June 20, 2009
This review is from: As Seen On TV! NEW One Touch Jar Opener Automatic
I have owned 2 and both self-destructed. The first lasted long enough to require a battery replacement (probably 20 openings) which was almost impossible due to the design. That one broke a plastic part shortly thereafter. The second jar opener self-destructed on the 5th jar. The same plastic part broke on it which indicates an inherent weakness in the design and material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pickle Jars of the World, Beware!, March 1, 2008
After 45 years of relying on my husband to open jars, I am no longer a tight-lid codependent. ONE TOUCH JAR OPENER works on big and wide pickle jars, mid-sized jars of apple sauce, slim jars of salsa, and any other jars I need to open.

Do not be put off by criticism of the opener's "slowness," for its careful operating speed is a safety feature. The cushioned outer jaws clamp slowly and softly onto the jar, so the glass is in no danger of breaking. The similarly cushioned inner jaws likewise clamp gently onto the lid, leaving it free of dents or bends, and thus usable for recapping the opened jar.

For less than $20, treat yourself to this enabling device. And if you have any senior and/or manually challenged friends or relatives, enable them, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings, December 15, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
1) the battery cover was REALLY poorly designed. it's hard to open the cover and place back. the two AA batteries go in harder than one would expect. one battery comes out easily, but the other one is *really* difficult to remove. this product was meant for people with finger/hand arthritis, exactly the type of people who are going to have trouble with this battery system. it's possible someone will have to change the batteries for the end-user, depending on the finger strength and dexterity of the end-user. wow, not the kind of issue you ever expect when you buy a product in the 21st century...

2) it's fairly (but not very) strong and it opens the majority of jars well, albeit slowly. it's not so strong that it can open jars that an average healthy young person with a decent grip can't. it just slips off. this device is meant for people with *very* weak grips to help them open non-stuck or "kind of stuck" jars, where it could be a big help. it won't help a person too much if they have mild arthritis and are only unable to open the really tough jars.

3) "one touch" is more like a somewhat prolonged push. once you get used to it, no big deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked great!, January 19, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have several jar openers and each has their faults, mainly with the jar size limitations. This opener is no exception; it will only open jars that are so big or so small. I found that it worked very well. I also like that it fits in a drawer. That is a big plus. All I ask is that it works and it does. Can't ask for more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked fine, then broke after a month, May 27, 2008
It was discouraging to see that others had a similar experience to mine. The product worked fine a few times, but after only a few jars the inner clamp broke. (I then opened the jar by hand, so it wasn't the jar's fault!) This happened on both the one I used and the one I bought for my mother.

Good idea but wait for a new, improved model. One Touch Jar Opener

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked well, then Broke., May 16, 2008
By
I purchased the onetouch Jar opener on 17 Dec 2007.
My wife loved it.
But it broke two months later after opening only three jars.
The inner jaws (plastic) slipped and broke on a simple 3.5 inch jar..
The warranty was for only one month.
Now I see why.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorley Made, May 22, 2008
I have had 2 of these since Christmas (5 months). They are slow but opened most jars. However when they tried to open one that was a bit hard, slipped and broke.
