Editorial Reviews

In their 14 year history Portal have traversed an untrodden path into the depths of subterranean and surreal terror in the guise of Death Metal - created by the long standing members Horror Illogium and The Curator, the artform has taken a life of its own. The cinematic aura of Portal is reminiscent to that which is emitted by films of the likes of Fritz Lang's M, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, Murnau's Nosferatu, and Salvador Dali's Un Chien Andalou and also the visionary arcane mind spewings of H.P. Lovecraft and August Derleth literature, whom of which Portal have paid tribute on occasion. Portal invented its own unique birth of Olde Worlde machinations, beings and the overall dimensions uttered on the two full lengths. 2003 debut album Seepia displays a destructive aural assault as rusty and antique as the artwork portrays, a bastardisation of Beherit & Immolation in recognition, however the texture, brutality and overall sickness leaves the listener polarized. Seepia is the frequency of the Vint-Age, the usher of Outre. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brutal Lovecraftian Antique Horror Metal, February 9, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Seepia (Audio CD)
I will start by saying, Portal's music IS NOT going to be for everyone. The scathing, atonal guitars create a real sense of claustrophobia. Drums hammer down and in bizzare new variations of traditional blast-beats and disorienting fills. Creating the illusion of complete chaos, yet always in control. Bass is almost inaudible, just enough in the mix to know its there. All this swarms around the raspy-gurgly-death rattle of The Curator.
4/5 stars because, as much as I like this one, I really enjoy their new album, 'Swarth', much more.
Long May They Continue To Cure The Sane.....
