5.0 out of 5 stars Very addictive, play one game and you're hooked!
I'm not a fisherman, but after playing this game, I feel like I've been fishing my entire life. The game play is so addictive that I find myself playing this game more than any other in my Dreamcast collection(which includes NFL2K, and NBA2K!). My wife bought me this game and the Fishing controller, and I can't put it down. It is great, just buy it and get hooked.

I really thought this game was going to be great. The sampler disc that comes with the Dreamcast has a demo of the first level of the game and I really enjoyed playing it. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the off season, March 22, 2000

Graphics Overall, the graphics are great. The fish movement is very realistic; fish lunge towards the surface to pick off bugs floating around, and they dive down to the bottom to suck up crayfish. It's as though you're watching a nature show that shows them in their natural habitat; they interact with their environment so well. Sometimes though, there are some minor clipping problems. One time I was fishing at the Palace, when a fish disappeared under the sandy bottom. A few moments later he came out of the sand like one of the monsters in Tremors and grabbed my lure; I couldn't help but laugh. Sometimes, though, the fish get stuck on an obstacle such as a wall or a pole and can't get around it. The graphics are great though, especially in the ending.

Sound The sound is pretty good, with a good announcer. When you get a bite, it yells out "Hit!", prompting you to set the hook. Once you accomplish this, it announces, "Fish!". As you reel the fish in, the announcer tells you which way to move the rod to ease tension ("Turn the rod left", "Lower the rod", etc.) Once you bring the fish in, the announcer judges it with such as phrases as: "Aww, small one" or "This one's huge!". The sound is great; the music, on the other hand, is overall mediocre and seems for the most part out of place. Some of the music should never be anywhere near a fishing game, but there is one track of music that is great (I think it is from the Cave or the Falls).

Gameplay The gameplay pretty much consists of selecting a spot, casting, and reeling it in. To catch fish, though, you must work a little harder; you have to find where the fish are hiding and present the lure to them correctly. If you don't do it right, they won't bite it. This is all easy though, if not too easy. Overall, the underwater camera is great for allowing you to see the fish, but sometimes you get a bad angle; for example, sometimes it shows a side view and you can't see behind the lure, sometimes the camera goes overhead even when there are no fish below you, and sometimes the camera shows the surface of the water even though you aren't using a topwater lure, and you can't see underwater.

Control The input is excellent in this game. The standard controller works perfectly well (especially with the analog trigger buttons), but the fishing controller is even better. The lure responds to your touch so well that you might think you are actually out on the lake fishing. Great control seems to be a trend in all the Dreamcast games I've played. I hope it keeps up.

Replay Value This category is the only place the game lacks. Sure there are three modes: Arcade, Original (tournament), and Practice, but they all have virtually the same objective. Arcade mode pits you agains the clock; you try to catch a certain amount of total pounds within the given time. If you don't though, you have unlimited continues and you resume right where the time ran out. You even keep the fish you caught before time ran out. It's impossible not to beat Arcade mode unless you don't continue or you quit. Original mode is slightly more challenging. You are ranked by total pounds against computer opponents in up to five stages for four tournaments. As you progress, you get new lures but the game gets harder. In each stage, there is a morning, noon, and evening time period in which you fish for four hours game time (about 5 minutes realtime). Sometimes it can be very hard to catch fish in such a short time, but once you learn the stages and know where the fish lie, you should have no trouble beating the computer. The tournaments get progressively harder by having a minimum size or allowing you to keep only a certain number of fish. One of the cool things thrown in is the secret lure you get once you reach the final tournament. I'm not going to give it away here, but way to go Sega! The ending is great, with excellent graphics, but beating the game leaves you wishing there was something else to do, such as a new mode. The main thing that hurts the replay value is a lack of multiplayer. It would be great to do a tournament against your friends. It wouldn't have to be split-screen; instead, you could switch off. There could even be a mode like Mario Golf's slot mode where you get only three random lures to use against your friends. A multiplayer mode would definitely be a great enhancement for this game.

Overall I must say that I am somewhat biased because I am an avid fisherman. I recommend this game for all fishermen, and it can be fun for everyone else too, but others might want to give it a rent first because it doesn't have good lasting value unless you really like it. If you buy it, definitely consider the fishing controller; it is slightly expensive, but it is worth it if you plan to play it a lot.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Game, But A Little Short, December 12, 1999

This game is definetly one of if not the best fishing game on the market. The graphics are absoulutly stunning, especially the fact that the scenery is reflected off the water. This breathtaking fishing trip takes you through 3 different modes of play including 5 fishing tournaments and all the while gaining 6 extra lures to add to your starting collection of 7. The fishing controller really adds to the mix I wouldn't recommend playing without it. The only problem I have with this game is that the gameplay is a little short. You can play arcade mode which is four levels and origanal mode which is 5 tournaments, but after that theres nothing. It just doesn't hook you and keep you coming back for more. In conclusion though I would recommend buying this game if you are a fishing game kinda person it is the best fishing sim on the market, but if your a serious gamer you'll want to buy the fishing controller too, without it it's not all that fun.

This is the best fishing game I have ever played, and I have played a few. What makes this game great is the fishing controller. It's like an actual fishing rod, but with no hook so when you cast, you don't hook your mom (like I did when I was 5). This game has amazingly realistic graphics, with the water efects and fish looking lifelike. The fisherman himself, however, is your standard looking person. Gameplay consists of casting, reeling, and hooking. You have to pick different lures and use them like a reel lure. The enviroments are great. My favorite is the castle level. Everything about this game is great. One thing though, don't buy this game without the fishing controller, it's much less fun without it.

This game is a must buy for fishing enthusiests and gamersalike. The graphics are so realistic it's like your actually there.I recommend using the DC controller instead of the fishing rod. Why? It just seems easier to control the fish that way. Maybe it's just me. In any event, this is another great title for the Dreamcast. Get one today! END

5.0 out of 5 stars A great realistic fishing game, April 24, 2001

If you like bass fishing enough to buy a game where all you do is fish for bass, then this is your game. The fish are realistic looking and the weight and size of the bass you catch are realistic. Some of the other fishing games I've played only let you catch 14 pounders over and over until its lame. But in this game you can catch fish of all different sizes. This game is so realistic that you have to know a lot about bass fishing to win the tournaments. The fish move to different locations and hit different lures in depending on the weather conditions, time of day, and time of year. As the tournaments go on, they get harder and much more challenging so you feel great when you finally catch the big 20 pounder. And about not being able to move around the lake and only staying on the shore? If you know anything about bass fishing you'd know that the best bass fishing is on the shore and in weed beds so you only need to stay along the shore. This game is also very realistic because you can easily lose the big one if you play the fish wrong. You have to pay attention to the tension on the line or else the fish will break off. Overall a great exciting game that kept me and my best bud up all night playing it. We are avid bass fishermen and go everyweekend so I'd say were pretty experienced with fishing for bass. We couldn't get enough of this game and sometimes will talk about even when we're actually fishing for bass at a lake! A great recomended buy.

I envsioned a game with dozens of levels that would provide hours of fun, but found that not to be the case. The animation and game play are pretty cool, but the short gamespan made for a bummer of an experience.

Awesome game...buy the fishing controller. It's really worth it. This game is great from everyone ...my little 5 year old brother to my dad all love it. It doesn't get boring and is a great way to have fun. It's also relaxing and EXTREMELY realisitic. Get this game.

I have to admit, this was my first fishing video game that I ever purchased and when I finally got around to playing it, I was suprised at how enjoyable SEGA BASS FISHING was! The game play is indeed addictive and this was also a suprise. I never thought a fishing game could be so much fun!

As for the game, it is about catching bass. That is pretty much the gist of it.You choose the lures and reel away! There is a practice mode, arcade mode, and a tournament mode which is really fun and competitive for a fishing game. The only thing I wanted was different species of freshwater fish in addition to all the bass. But bass fishing it is. SEGA MARINE FISHING is a great companion to this for those who like saltwater fishing.

SEGA BASS FISHING is a great game... I recommend this game!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fishing fun even after a decade!, December 26, 2009
By

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sega Bass Fishing (Video Game)
When I first played one of the Sega fishing games on the Dreamcast way back when it first came out, I thought that it was one of the funnest games I had ever played. Now, that was the marine fishing version, Sega Marine Fishing, and we did have the fishing controller, so it was a ton of fun. It was really the only game we all wanted to play back then.

However, I think Sega Bass Fishing is more fun, especially since we do regularly catch bass in this part of the country. It's nice to see that they have a variety of locations to fish at, and a number of lures to do so as well. I'm always catching my dad experimenting with the locations and lures to see which work the best where.

As for the graphics and sould, for being a game that is a decade old, they have held up great, although the Wii version, Sega Bass Fishing, does look somewhat nicer and sounds better. When you hook a fish in the Dreamcast version, a high-toned Japanese girl voice will say "Fish," and the voice giving you directions also sounds a little too Japanese. With the Wii version, they cleaned that up and sounds more like a native English speaker (oh, and no more high-toned Japanese girl voice when you hook the fish).

Also preferred over the Wii version would be the controllers. With the Dreamcast, they made a special fishing controller with the reel on the right-hand side and great vibration when you're reeling your fish in. While you can get a fishing rod for the Wii, you basically just place the Wiimote and nunchuck in holders, plus they can break easily if you reel too hard. It is worth it to get a fishing controller for the Dreamcast but not for the Wii, however with the Wii version, you may have to get used to reeling with your left hand if that is the hand you normally hold the nunchuck and vise versa.

So, if you still have a Dreamcast, or just recently picked one up, make sure to get this game or the Sega Marine Fishing game. Then make sure to get a fishing controller as well. Sega made one, but we are a 3rd party brand and it works just as good. Once you have a game and a controller, get ready for some fun!
