4.0 out of 5 stars This thing did NOT get the respect or attention it deserved.
Had the 32X been supported more, it very well could have been a classic. It was a semi-powerful system, creating spectacular graphical pictures, (it a 32-bit system, you can't expect much) such as Kunckles Chaotix special stages. 2.0 out of 5 stars The tumor that killed Sega, October 8, 2008
This review is from: Sega Genesis 32X Console (Video Game)
Yeah, that's what this thing is-- just look at it, sitting ontop of a perfectly good Genesis-- A TUMOR! This thing was a horrible idea and would not have happened if there had been a more cohesive structure in Sega's corporate ladder, but unfortunately here's what happened: Sega of Japan made the Sega Saturn, and Sega of America made the 32x. No-one wanted the 32x, because the Saturn was already out in Japan, so this thing sunk like a rock. It drew precious resources away from the Sega Saturn, and it killed consumer confidence in Sega which they never recovered from. On top of that, this thing is UGLY! It might not look so bad on the box, but that's because they don't show you all the hideous cables you have to hook up to it!

With all that said, there were a small handful of decent games released on the system-- unfortunately though, almost all of them were ports. There was Doom (better graphics than SNES but inferior music), Mortal Kombat II, Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Fighter, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (although not noticeably better than the SNES version), and all of these are ports. Knuckles Chaotix is pretty much the only 32x exclusive title I can think of that's worth mentionin, and even that paled in comparison Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD.

I think that if the 32x had never come out, Sega would still be making consoles to this day. The Sega CD was not successful, although it's agreed that it does have a decent library of games. Customers would have forgiven Sega for the Sega CD's failure because it was a cool innovation that didn't quite take off, but when they made a second add on that was a total turd biscuit, people simple got frustrated and moved on. It's quite fitting that Sega chose an advertising campaign for this thing with sexual undertones regarding the insertion of the 32x into the Genesis's cart slot, because this thing basically raped the Genesis and stole its innocence.

This thing can be found for so cheap now though, there's not much reason to not buy one just for the novelty of seeing some primitive 32 bit games running on a Genesis. Or better yet, if you're proficient with a soldering iron you can try your hand at hacking the thing and putting it directly inside of the Genesis's casing, as some clever hackers have done in the past. This is actually a very cool project because it gives you access to the 32x's fancy 32 bit games without having a hideous tumor and extra cables coming out of your system. Not recommended for amateurs, but still cool none the less. But this thing as a souvenir, but for the sake of your Genesis's dignity don't leave it plugged in unless your playing a 32x game.

Had the 32X been supported more, it very well could have been a classic. It was a semi-powerful system, creating spectacular graphical pictures, (it a 32-bit system, you can't expect much) such as Kunckles Chaotix special stages. The graphical effects can also be very pixelated, (Stage start in Knuckles Chaotix and Cosmic Carnage character zoom-in) usually due to unnessacary zoom-in on sprites, making it look like an extremely low-res system/periphrial. The reason the 32X went down the drain to live with Sega CD's and R.O.B. the Robots', is because it didn't have enought 3rd party support, meaning there is a total of ~40 or less games. Now, to end this review, if you do get this for somebody who wants to play lots of games being lots of fun, then skip this. If you want to get this for someone who can appreciate good old gaming nostalgia, than its totally worth the little amount of money it is. I've played two 32X games, both previously mentioned, but I may actually finish the entire collection, and acquire the extremely rare Spider-Man: Web of Fire, so expect reviews for 32X games in the future. I refer to myself on the internet as Zike the Fox, and you can see reviews for 32X games first at my website on [...].

Bottom Line: Worth it for gamers.

5.0 out of 5 stars This thing is underrated and certainly worth owning., July 15, 2011

It could be a big novelty and nostalgia factor, but to me this thing is awesome. If you can find one around forty bucks or less, pick it up!! There are only around 30 games released for it so it's fun to try and collect them all, I have around 20 or so. It really does a great job with the graphics, and it has many exclusive games on it... the ports on it are also very fun and unique. They really are similar to the arcade versions of the games. Mortal Kombat II, Primal Rage, Virtua Figher... all just like the arcade versions. Buy this thing and respect Sega for what they tried to do. I sure did.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needless, disappointing add-on, November 28, 2005
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Genesis 32X Console (Video Game)
Already with the Sega CD as an available add-on for the Genesis, and with the 32-bit era around the corner, Sega released the 32X; a cartridge based add-on that promised 32-bit play on a 16-bit system. When you pop it into your Genesis along with a 32X game, you'll notice that many of these supposed 32-bit games look only a step above 16-bit. What killed the 32X, much like what killed the Sega CD, was the lack of quality games released for the system. The only game I can recall that was excellent for the 32X was Sega's World Series Baseball, and after that everything else is pretty much avaerage. Third party support was almost non-existant except from Acclaim, but for those who first heard about this add-on before it was released, it was pretty much known that the 32X was doomed from the start. Below is a list of the best games available for the 32X:

World Series Baseball
Virtua Fighter
Star Wars Arcade
Doom
Mortal Kombat 2
Knuckles Chaotix
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure

2.0 out of 5 stars 32X murdered Genny, September 22, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Genesis 32X Console (Video Game)
I'll be the first to admit I love Sega CD but 32X was bad from the get go. Becuse Sega Saturn was released about 5 6 months after the 32X it would be like Sony making an add on for PS2 6 months before Playstion 3 would be set to come out. The only reason to get this terrible add on is for MK2 but then again SNES was a good port 32X version was the best next to the arcade. Sega CD I recommend but 32X pick it up at your local sewer for a quarter cause that's where it belongs. But hey it's a lot better than Nintendo's Virtual boy.

The Sega 32x is so cool because it makes the Genesis2 work on 32 bit graphics. The games are limited, but there are Knuckles Choatix, Star Wars Arcade, Nba Jam Te,etc. The unit is pretty big, which goes into the cartridge bay of the genesis2. Get it now on amazon for $[...] before they run out!

4.0 out of 5 stars a great teriffic system but not exactly 5 stars, August 2, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Genesis 32X Console (Video Game)
this system is great, my first 32 bit system!but there are some flaws like all the required chords used to make it work. how ever it is backwards compatible with all genesis games and has a few absolute gems on the system stuff like
B.C. racers (fun fun FUN!)
DooM (one of my all time favorite shooters)
star wars arcade
primal rage(if getting a massive gorilla and peeing your foe to death isn't fun...what is?)
knuckles chaotix (an absolute must have!)
mortal kombat 2 (graphics are pretty neat)
what are you waiting for nintendo to make one?

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of garbage, September 5, 2009
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Genesis 32X Console (Video Game)
This was a piece of total garbage and a horrid looking tumor for the Sega Genisis. The piece of crap requires it's own large Ac adapter etc just like the Genisis, it had crappy games, and had a history of breaking genisis games. This is laughable to look at and this and Sega cd added nothing to the genisis system, but it was a worthy try to match nintendo.
