3.0 out of 5 stars For the 1989-style gamer in you...just make sure you have one in you first
1) So, this UMD packs in a huge collection of games from the Sega Genesis, and lot of the games on here were classics on the Genesis.

2) If you were to buy all of these games individually via downloadable services like the Wii's Virtual Console, they would cost you many times what this little disc costs.

3) All of the games are faithfully and...

This review is from: Sega Genesis Collection (Video Game)
While video game technology continues to grow, it's important to remember our roots - and this collection of 4th generation Genesis games is a great way to relive that past glory.

The following are included in this compilation:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle - This is a cute game in a Mario-like setting. The gameplay has intermissions of Janken (Rock, Paper, Scissors).

Altered Beast - In this side scroller fighting game, you take the role of a centurion brought back from the dead, with mystical powers at your disposal.

Bonanza Bros. Similar to the Atari 2600 game Keystone Kapers; you take control of one of the Bonanza Brothers. Your goal is to steal items from various houses without getting caught.

Columns - Akin to games like Tetris, this puzzle game is designed to match up gems vertically, diagonally, or horizontally.

Comix Zone -You are Sketch Turner, a comic book artist who has to fight his way out of a comic strip he created.

Decap Attack - This has similar gameplay to Sonic the Hedgehog, except you play as a decapitated mummy called Chuck D. Head.

Ecco the Dolphin / Ecco: The Tides of Time / Ecco Jr. - This is a side-scroller trilogy where you get to control a dolphin named Ecco to rescue members of his pod, travel through space & time, or relive your roots as a young dolphin.

Flicky - It's your duty as Flicky the bird to rescue lost chicks from housecats and a mischievous iguana.

Gain Ground - An interesting game where you choose from 3 characters with different weapons & abilities...the goal for each stage? Kill or be killed.

Golden Axe / Golden Axe II / Golden Axe III -This side-scrolling, hack `n' slash trilogy pits the characters of an elf, a barbarian, or an Amazon against the murderous Death Adder, the Dark Guild, and various other enemies with swords and sorcery.

Kid Chameleon - Similar to the plot of TRON, it's up to you to defeat every level of a video game nightmare with masks to power up your character in unique ways.

Phantasy Star II / Phantasy Star III / Phantasy Star IV - This is an epic role-playing game series. You can play Algol Star System, or play part III with multiple endings, or store attack sequences in part IV.

Ristar - The game that inspired Sonic the Hedgehog, your character is in a side scroller setting, using stretching arms & hands to move and combat foes.

Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi - A platform game with a dog as your sidekick and ninjitsu as your weapons.

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master - Advanced ninjitsu, new enemies, and varied gameplay make Shinobi III an excellent entry in this collection.

Sonic The Hedgehog / Sonic The Hedgehog 2- The series debut of that ring collecting Hedgehog, starring Dr. Robotnik, and his sidekick Tails!

Super Thunder Blade - A helicopter attack game with missiles, guns, and more enemies than you know what to do with!

Sword of Vermilion - An RPG with different views and menus to spice up the gameplay.

Vectorman / Vectorman 2 - This side scrolling game series allows you to control an Orbot to restore peace to the planet earth.

Virtua Fighter 2- The game which changed the face of 3D fighting games for all time.

There are 5 more unlockable games, which are unique to the PSP version:

Astro Blaster - Unlocked by completing Comix Zone Episode 1.
Congo Bongo - Unlocked by finding a Chaos Emerald in Sonic the Hedgehog.
Eliminator - Unlocked by beating the 2nd stage of Altered Beast.
Space Fury -Unlocked by finding the first hidden area in Ristar.
Super Zaxxon - Unlocked by trying every game, including bonus games.

+ Pros:

+ Great game selections
+ Ability to choose button layouts
+ Savable progress within every game
+ 2 player capability with WAN connection

- Cons:

- Some of the cheat codes don't work

If you only want one compilation disc for your PSP, The Sega Genesis Collection is all you'll ever need. I highly recommend this one. If you have a Playstation 3, I'd also recommend Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best compilations you'll ever find., September 8, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Genesis Collection (Video Game)
This collection has it all. Platformers, Brawlers, RPGs, Fighting, top down shooters, and some fantastic arcade games you probably never heard of.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - what can be said? its the signature sega franchise, and still a blast to play today.

Super Thunder Blade - early attempt at 3d in the vein of star fox

Sword of Vermilion - classic rpg goodness

VectorMan 1 and 2 - a great platformer/shooter

Alex Kidd - a surprisingly tough platformer

Altered Beast - a brawler where you take the forms of animals

Ecco + Tides of Time and Jr - great platformer/adventure series

Flicky - a fun little arcade game in the vein of Joust

Gain Ground - top down shooter action with rpg elements

Golden Axe 1, 2, and 3 - one of the best brawler series of the 16-bit era

Kid Cameleon - a great platformer with tons of different powers/costumes

Phantasy Star 2, 3, and 4 - great rpg series spanning thousands of years

Ristar - a unige action/platformer

Shadow Dancer- a punishing prequel to Shinobi

Shinobi III- great action/platformer. the best in the series

Virtua Fighter 2- its the genesis version, not the arcade. decent but nothing compared to the arcade version.

Bonus Games: Astro Blaster, Congo Bongo, Eliminator, Space Fury, and Super Zaxxon. ive only unlocked congo bongo and space fury so far. the first one is like an isometric Donkey Kong, and the other is like a much more colorful asteroids.

other extras include original trailers for certain games as well as developer interviews. overall its one of the best deals on the PSP. any fan of retro games/nostalgia needs to pick this one up immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sega Genesis games!!!!!! Come on come all!!!!!!!!!, January 2, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Genesis Collection (Video Game)
Okay sorry about the cheesy carnival introduction, but this is simply one of the best compilations I have seen for the PSP. The PSP's strong points have gaven us some awesome complilations (Namco Battle Museum, Capcom collection), and it just got better. Now, here's the thing.

YOu could again, like most of the sheep, buy this for the PS2 console and write of this one, but seriously, do you really want to play old games on a big screen TV? IS it really a treat to here the crappy Columns music blasted everywhere from a home theater sound system? Yeah, the truth is, old games are just so much better on the go, on a slaw system. Okay, if you don't have a PSP, don't run out and get it just for this, but seriously, though, get this instead of the console versions. IT just seems better. Save your HDTV's screen life for Gears OF war or Motorstorm instead of ancient games. Oh and by the way, I can't imagine how grainy the old games will look on a huge TV. That is all.

Now for the game itself. THis truely is more than just a game collection. THe menus are stylish full of great music and cool effects and are easy to use, and fell really slick. Each game has box art, tips, and a museum about the game. You get 28 games that can be customized quite a bit, but are exactly like they were when they first came out. Like for example, each game starts out with the old Sega intro, so basically, right when you start the game, the game feels like you just hooked the original Genesis collection to your PSP. Sonic even has the pause effect it had on the Genesis. The games itself are pretty self explainitory, and you get Golden Axe, the Sonicx games, 3 Phantasy Star games, Columns, and other great games, but you also get some classics some people never got, such as the underrated Super Thunder Blade.

To top it off, you also get some very great extras. YOu have some interesting interviews, a cheat sheet, some interesting arcade games (that probally only took up 60 KB), and some trailers for new games like Virtua Fighter 5 and Phantasy Star Universe. It's prety cool stuff, but you have to unlock it, so if you really are a Sega nerd or like to cheat, your gonna have to play it to win it.

And best of all, the game loads fast. The port when very smoothyl, so you odn't need to worry about wonky controls (the controls are great, and using the analog stick to play Sonic is very good) and load times (they are very fast). So basically, this is better than the console version, plus, who can deny great Genesis games on the road. Sure beats any cellphone game.

This is a no-brainer. If you liked the games from The Genesis, than this will be a game you need to pick up. Add this to your PSP collection, and Happy new Year as well. Can't believe I am already in my 20's. But that's life. Peace out.

1) So, this UMD packs in a huge collection of games from the Sega Genesis, and lot of the games on here were classics on the Genesis.

2) If you were to buy all of these games individually via downloadable services like the Wii's Virtual Console, they would cost you many times what this little disc costs.

3) All of the games are faithfully and functionally translated to the PSP.

However...

4) A lot of these games aren't that interesting to people who weren't die-hard Genesis players (Alex Kidd? Flicky?)

5) Even some of the games that were famous on the system or in arcades don't really hold up two decades later (e.g., Golden Axe).

So, I enjoyed this collection. I put quite a bit of time into playing the Sonic games (though I never was and still am not very good), Shinobi, Ristar, Vectorman, and even Golden Axe. However, after a few days, I realized that my nostalgia for 16 bit gaming did not match my actual enjoyment of playing these games. Most of these games, in comparison with easier, richer modern games, require lots and lots of practice and skill far in excess of what I was willing to put into the games.

So, if you want to relive the genesis gaming experience, this collection is the best, cheapest way to do it (or maybe the PS2 version?), but before you do, make sure you remember what old-school gaming was really like!

Absolutely LOVE this game! I am old school and use to have a Sega Genesis back in the day. This game also has a lot of interviews, other games, etc to unlock by playing certain games, etc. One of them is a Sega Cheat sheet with all kinds of cool codes to use. Definitely recommend this to anyone who loves classic video games!

Really great value, I was expecting a couple of games maybe 5 or so but you get 28!!!! Great bundle of classics all in one game. I was however disappointed as I am a fan of the genesis that certain titles like the disney games (Aladdin, Lion King were not included) ,Sonic 3, Mortal Kombat series, earth worm gym, any of the ea sports games , but overall Im happy with what they have included, also a bunch of games ive never seen are included with bonus features with the creators and museum description of each game.

My favorite titles on this game are
Sonic 1, 2
Ecco 1 , Ecco 2 tides of time
virtua fighter
shinobi I and II
ristar
comix zone
the golden axe series
and last but not least Vector man !!!!!

there are many other titles but these are the ones I really enjoyed. Buy this collection!!

This is a great walk down memory lane. I played almost every one of these games on the Genesis. I can't believe it's been so many years. These games are still fun. I bought it for the PSP because I think I'll like taking them wherever I go. I wish the PSP had more and better games, because the hardware is great. Thanks Sega! Will there be a Sega Collection 2, with more classics? Thanks Amazon for getting this product here 4 days before you said you would!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can Sega be any more generous??, June 6, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Genesis Collection (Video Game)
Geez...you've seen what Sega has done in recent years. Although there were some bad Sonic games in the line of the 2000s' Sega games, the company has released a lot of game collections, and this is on of them. Actually, even more recently, these collections are HUGE. This one has 28 games, plus 5 unlockable ones, resulting in 33 total!

Most (Like...over 90% of these games) of these Sega Genesis games are already released in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but there's still a reason to own this even if you already have that compilation. That reason is: This is the PSP version, meaning that you are playing 33 games within the palm of your hand!

The games themselves are awesome, for the most part. There are a few games that aren't really worth it, like Alex Kidd and maybe the sequels to Golden Axe (They don't really live up to the first game well), but lemme tell ya, there are platformers, fighting games, arcade games, puzzlers, and EVEN FREAKING RPGs (Phantasy Star games)!

C'mon..you know you want to play all of these 33 games. It's an offer for your PSP you can't possibly refuse.
