'Falcon' Awesome!, January 4, 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This system needs no intro, nor an outro. It brought us some of the classics (Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast), and gave us a feel of what games could be like (Shining Force II, Earthworm Jim).
If you're wondering why the Genesis is held in such high esteem, all you need to do is look at its extensive library of games. The early titles were marginal (including the original pack-in game "Altered Beast") but the quality increased over time. The system excelled in platformers, shooters, and most of all, sports titles. Compared to their Super Nintendo counterparts, Genesis sports titles didn't look as sharp or sound as clear, but they played far better. Due to its sizeable library and excellent packaging, the Genesis is an ideal system for collectors. Individual cartridges are inexpensive, and it's not difficult to find complete games in great condition. The variety of games will satisfy any taste, although shooter and sports fans will especially be drawn to the system. The Genesis systems themselves are also very commonplace and inexpensive.
Pros and Cons:
+ Huge, terrific library.
+ Fast action, smooth animation with minimal slowdown.
+ Superb packaging
+ Highly collectable
+ Shining Force II
- Three-button controller limiting for fighting games
- Meager sound capabilities

still one of the best systems ever created..., March 3, 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
the sega genesis..ah this takes me back..it was christmas 1989 when i was first introdeced to this system i remember it made my christmas that year..i had a atari 7800 at the time as well as a nes and master system( which i still have in great condition and still use to this day) but there was something special about the sega genesis that was top notch..the graphics were and still are excellent..the titles are great..i love the shinobi series, as well as the arcade classics..there are too many to count ... this was the best system that sega has put on the market, sure the others(master system, dreamcast. and the awesome saturn) were great in their own right and have great titles etc..the genesis was the only system that sega had made that lasted for so many years through the expansion units such as the power base converter, the 32x set up and my favorite the rare sega cd(the version that you put the original model gebesis on top of)
In this day of playstation 2(soon to be playstation 3) the x box, xbox 360, and others the sega genesis has stood the test of time and is highly sought after by collectors..why you might ask? because the games were done, fun, and still hold up well today. the original model with the volume control and headphone jack is the one to get..the original and still the best:) i have my same one since 1989 and its still going strong in 2006 this is what you get when you create a well built, highly entertaining system..the people still come back for more even 15 plus years later...

One of the greatest consoles ever..., August 13, 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I purchased a Sega Genesis console back in November 1989. My Genesis is still in mint condition and I pull it out once in a while to relive the classics. If you do not own one of these gems, I highly recommend that you pick one up! There are hundreds of titles available, most of which sell for only a few dollars. Some of these titles are among the greatest video games ever created; you must own these if you're a collector.
While playing these games, it's important to consider the limits the game developers were constrained to. Unlike today's consoles - with seemingly unlimited CPU power, bandwidth and memory - the developers were forced to work with a very small amount of storage capacity to hold graphics and sound data. Over time, these developers came up with some very clever techniques to overcome these limitations. I recall being "wowed" by the effects in games such as Gunstar Heroes and Earthworm Jim...effects I had no idea my little old Genesis could do more than five years after owning it! Over time, I came to really appreciate these efforts and continued looking forward to how much further the envelope would be pushed.
Below is a list of must-own games for the Genesis. This is by no means a definitive list; these are just my favorites among those games I have played.
Platformers: Sonic 1, 2 & 3, Chuck Rock 2, Castle of Illusion, Ristar, Alex Kidd, Earthworm Jim, Aladdin, Ecco, Flink*(see bottom) and Shinobi 3.
Fighters/Brawlers: Golden Axe, Streets of Rage 1 & 2, Eternal Champions, Street Fighter II CE and Two Crude Dudes.
Shooters: Gunstar Heroes, Truxton, Sub Terrania, Gaiares, M.U.S.H.A., Ranger X and Raiden.
RPGs: Phantasy Star 2, 3 & 4, Beyond Oasis, Land Stalker, Crusader of Centy and Shining Force II.
Sports: Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf, Madden and Tommy Lasorda Baseball.
If you're inclined to pick up the Sega CD add-on, you should also consider the following: Flink, Wonderdog, Final Fight CD, Sonic CD, Earthworm Jim SE, Robo Aleste, Silpheed, AH3 Thunderstrike and Batman Returns.
*The Misadventures of Flink is available on cartridge in the Euro market only; however, it's available domestically on the Sega CD.
