About half of the games contained on this Smash Pack are still fun games to play today, the rest feel too dated to be of much fun and makes me wonder why certain titles were picked. Streets Of Rage 2, Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Ax, and Vectorman stand out as the best games on the pack. THey're still fun, not too difficult, and haven't grown boring with age. Virtua Cop 2 should also be up on that list, but since I don't have a gun its not as fun as it could be. Shining Force and Phantasy Star 2 are two decent RPG which could probably be enjoyed by a fan of the genre. The two puzzle games Columns and Sega Swirl aren't too special, but aren't really bad either. Revenge Of Shinobi seems like it would be fun if it weren't so insanely hard. Finally, Altered Beast and Wrestle War are the only two games on here that I'd classify as being terrible. I guess my only two problems with the set were that I wish some different games had been on here in place of some of the ones I didn't particularly enjoy, and that maybe a few more games should have been included to sweeten the Smash Pack. Overall, it really depends on how many of the games you like, and what you want to pay for the ones that you do like.

Hey, now this is what I'm talking about!! The only reason I miss about my Genesis was Streets of Rage and Golden Axe, and now I can play it on my DC. The sound is a little messed up, like on Sonic, it sounds nothing like the original, but it still plays the same. I found some great games on there that I had never heard of but now love, like Shinning Force, that game is awesome, and Vurtual Cop 2. Get this if you miss your Genesis, or, if you never owned one, you might still want to look at this. By the way, to the guy commenting on Golden Axe sound, that sound is actually right from the Genesis game, it is one of the few games on the cd that they got the sound right on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, just turn down the volume, August 24, 2001
This review is from: Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 (Video Game)
It's great being able to play all the great games on here, but what is with the sound??? Now I know the Genesis didn't have the best sound quality, but it least it was listenable, the sound on here on the Genesis games is absolutely terrible. Besides that gripe the games are great though, being able to play Phantasy Star 2, Shining Force, Revenge of Shinobi, and Streets of Rage 2 without having to hook up my old Genesis is great, plus the addition of Virtua Cop 2 and Sega Swirl adds a lot to this great package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sega's Golden Age, July 5, 2003

All the games in this collection were loved by everyone the day they came out. Although not all of them have withstood the test of time, this collection is still worth it especially when you consider the price. Shining Force is a classic and one of the predecessors to games like Final Fantasy Tactics. Phantasy Star II is a RPG classic that no enthusiast should be without. Streets of Rage 2 is a classic beat em up that can still be enjoyed on a slow day when you have nothing else to do. Sonic is of course Sonic but Sonic 2 would have definitely have been better. Revenge of Shinobi is fun but not as fun as it used to be. Vectorman was one of the games that proved that the Genesis still had some life when the Genesis was close to being retired. Golden Axe is fun but can get frustrating after a while. Altered Beast is fun only for nostaglic kicks since the gameplay is severely dated. Virtua Cop 2 is alright but would be better if you had a gun peripheral. Wrestle War is just boring after five minutes and it will wear your thumbs out. Sega Swirl and Columns are entertaining if you like puzzle games but in my view no one has been able to top tetris. So if you are a fan of "retro" games, this collection will definitely be worth the investment. You'll get hours of entertainments from the jewels hidden in this game. I'm still trying to beat Phantasy Star II.

The Sega SmashPack has all your classic favorites! I bought it for the dirt cheap price and it was one of the best Dreamcast Buys ever. If you like classic games, SmashPack is for you. I hadn't played Sonic the Hedgehog for years, and I had loads of fun playing it on the SmashPack. And how can we forget Altered Beast and Golden Axe! These games are perfectly remade, exactly like the originals. Vectorman, Revenge of Shinobi, and my personal favorite, Streets of Rage 2. Buy the Sega Dreamcast Smash Pack! It's well worth it!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 (Video Game)
Well, I've gotta say that I was hella excited about the Smash Pak when I saw it on Amazon the other day; it was a great excuse to break out my Dreamcast again, right!

In a word: No. No, it wasn't. It's a great idea on paper, but the sound reproduction is astoundingly bad. I actually compared several of the games on the disc to the originals, and there are missing sounds, added sounds (what's with the ridiculous "boing" noise when you hit the jump button in Streets of Rage 2!?), scratchy samples/noises, horrid music that, in some cases, has different notes and sounds than the originals.

The graphics are fine, and appear to be pretty much perfect, however, an option for bilinear filtering or interpolation sampling to clean things up a touch would've been nice.

I suppose there are probably worse ways to spend [...].

No doubt about it, these SEGA games are classics. It will keep you entertained for hours and hours, specially if you're playing with a friend. The only thing I didn't like was the sound. It sounds weird and nothing like the classic games. Other than that... A must have!

3.0 out of 5 stars What's with the sound?, January 21, 2002

I'm a big fan of Phantasy Star 2. I bought this CD just for this great game. Golden Axe, Sonic the hedgehog and Virtua Cop 2 would be great bonuses, I thought. It turned out that the sound was so bad. It was nothing near the original version. I couldn't bear playing through the first dungeon.

Be prepared. I was warned before but I thought it would be alright and that's not true.

Did they try to pack too many titles (some are mediocre) in one disk by reducing the sound quality? If so, I have to say this is a horrible decision, indeed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Faithful translation to the dreamcast.....except the sound, August 14, 2001

I have to say that the Sega Smash Pack is a complete blast, firstly, and before I get into the nitty gritty of my dislikes, I have to say that the smash pack is awesome. I grew up with the genesis, and I remember the better half of the games on the smash pack. Golden Axe, Sonic 1, Phantasy Star 2 (I still have to beat that game), Revenge of Shinobi, they're all done incredibly well. except for the sound reproduction.

Now I'm sure we all know that sega decided to take the easy way out of redoing each game and just made an emulator to handle the genesis games in their raw form. If not, there's a head's up right there to what I'm getting to. Now, seeing as the emulator is meant to mimic the original system, it can't be perfect, can it? In some cases, it can, in this case it is not. The sound reproduction is horrible, and it's a bear to sit through 15 minutes of listening to phantasy star, or shining force.

My words of advice are these: if you want to get the smash pack, then great, hop to it and buy it now. but be ready to turn the volume all the way down and turn on some other form of audio entertainment.
