Sega turned another one of its great Dreamcast sports games into an even better PS2 game. This game is pretty much the same as the Dreamacst version, but still a whole lot of fun. This game has not only 8 men but also has 8 women players. The players include Patrick Rafter, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Tommy Haas, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles.

The gameplay is amazing. There are 3 buttons you use. One is for a lob shot, one is for a smash shot and the other is just a regular old shot. You really only need to use two buttons (the joystick and the A button).

The graphics are way better than 2000's Virtua Tennis (for the Dreamcast) and are even better than most of the other 2K2 games. Each player resembles it's real-life counterpart very well and any tennis fan can pick them out. The graphics are so realistic that their clothes and shoes look exactly like what they do in real-life. The courts are also very realistic and their are more than a dozen more different courts.

There are 3 modes: World Tour, Exhibition and Tournament. In World Tour you pick a player and participate in a variety of singles and doubles matches as well as many fun bonus games like in Virtua Tennis. You earn money when you win or do good in the bonuses to use to buy more equipment or courts. In Exhibition you just pick two players and serve away in just one match. In tournament mode you pick one player and face off against the rest of the men or women and player in a series of games until you either win the championship or lose.

Some more cool things are that you can actually understand the PA announcer and when you hit a ball into the net the ball boys run out and retrieve the balls. Also when you hit a ball out of the court near the wall the people standing there will avoid the balls by moving out of the way instead of standing like statues.

Also the players are every detailed. Monica Seles grunts when she hits the ball and after you win your player has a big smile and after you lose they look very mad and disappointed and are ready to throw their rackets.

The only things missing are some of the players like Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriti.

This game is a must-have for any owner of a PS2 who is a tennis fan.

It's the best, alright. But its competition is...well, none existent, really.

What I liked about the game was its attention to detail. Unlike other tennis title, your character actually developes in skill. At first, your ground strokes and serves are pathetically slow. Fortunately, so is the footwork of your opponents. There are alot of training games you can play (it's more of a mini-game) to improve our skills. Want to have a blazing serve? Then 'train' in either the serve bowling game or the shoot for prize game.

There are 2 training games for each skills, which include: groundstrokes, volleys, footwork, and serve. Those 4 sets of skills are also divided into individual sub-skill sets. For example, on your serve, you have power and control skills sets. And for your ground strokes, you have power, control, and angel, all divided into left and right hand groups.

You gain rank by playing and beating your opponent. At first, there won't be much tournaments you'll be able to attend to due to your low ranking. Soon, however, after much training, you'll be able to attend the top tournaments, such as Wimbeldon and U.S. Open.

Now the dislikes...you don't improve your skill by playing matches. Training in those mini games is mandatory, instead of something to pass time on. I'd also loved to have a realistic partner training to improve your skills. Also, as with every other tennis game I played...the service is a joke. I have nearly maxed out my service yet I have only scored a couple aces. Serve a power service going 120mph, and your opponent not only returns it with ease, they'll return it with such pace and angle, you're left playing catch up the whole point. It also goes the same for your opponents service. The only time they get aces is when I pretty much let them.

Also, due to the lack of skill improvement by playing actual matches, attaining the top 10 rank will take too much time. It took me over 10 years to attain that rank!

Hopefully sega will release a new version in the near future that addresses many of the finer points.

I'm not even into tennis, but I have played several different tennis games (both on PS and PS2). Sega Sport Tennis outplays the other games without hesitation. The play is so much smoother, faster and EXTREMELY EASY. You don't have to be a tennis pro to play this game!! I love to play the pro tour mode... and go through all the training and matches to see my player move up in the ranks. Everyone I have ever talked to who has played this game, including me, has become horribly addicted to it. You sit down to play a few minutes and realize that several hours have flown by!!! It truly is a fun game to play by yourself or with another!!:)

I've been playing a friend's copy of Sega Sports Tennis and just ordered it for myself. I have purchased Sega Sports Tennis and also Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament, by Namco, both for Playstation 2. Sega Sports was released in July 2002, while Smash Court was released on March 2002. Sega is MUCH more fun than Smash Court. The graphics are VERY good and the play is, albeit slightly less realistic, much more practical for using computer controls...with Smash Court if you're not at the right place at the right time, you miss the ball (hard to see 3D in real life, impossible on a TV set - Namco: it's a game, make it fun! Sega: Good job!).
Believe it or not, this game has helped my game in Real life, allowing me to be more aware of all players' positions in the court.
You can create your own character(s) - one male, one female - train them and battle it out with the others.

When I first played Virtua tennis in the arcade. I was thinking to myself that I wish sega would make this game for the PS2 because it was excellent. Then a few weeks later my wish came true and I heard that Sega was developing a tennis game for PS2. The day it came out I went down to the store and got it.

The One player mode in SST provides a great amount of fun. You create your own players (a man and a women) and you train them to go play in tournaments. The players level up like in final fantasy. The training consists of mini-games that train your serve, volley, strokes and footwork. The only problem with this one player mode is that in the beggining your players are awful at hitting the ball (probally like us in real life). But once you level them up it is great fun.

In terms of graphics they are good compared to anything the dreamcast could ever do. But Sega probally didn't use all of the pS2's availbable powere though because after a point the the courts and players look all grainy and it looks like something from a nintendo 64 but the in game graphics are really good

The control in SST must be one of the best ever for a tennis game. It isn't to senstive but not to sluggish, it is very responsive and you can basically place the ball wherever u like. And the people move just like in real life.

The multiplayer is great in this game. It can use a multi- tap adapter and you an play with four players. So u can have a Sega Sports Tennis party if u like. The only problem with it is that I can't seem to find anyone who is a challlenge for me.

When you sum up all of this games aspects up, you get one of the best tennis games ever made, far surpassing any of its competitors such as Mario Tennis and Smash-c Court Tennis

Sega's Tennis is the PS2 conversion of the Dreamcast instant classic Tennis 2K2, and I expected it to be a lot better than this, not to mention I wonder why this game wasn't polished enough before it got released. First off what happened to the graphics? The silky smooth slick graphics from Tennis 2K2 have been reduced to jagged edges on the players, weird shimmering on the courts, and overall poor texture quality which is just puzzling consider this is the PS2 we're talking about. But wait, I'm not done yet, the A.I. controlled doubles partners are beyond bad and constantly make mistakes making you have to scramble on a regular basis. Fortunately though, there is enough good qualities here to warrant a rental at least. The electrifying gameplay and extremely tight dead on control remain intact from the original, and despite the graphics the game is still undeniably fun, which was the heart of Sega's Tennis series, that even if you don't like tennis, you'll love the addicting video game. However, if you own a Dreamcast and Tennis 2K2, stick to it because that is the better version. But if you don't and you own a PS2, this is a decent pick up.

this is an AWESOME GAME!, i can't begin to explain how wonderful this game is. i had the namco version of tennis called SmashCourt Pro Tennis, it was a solid game, but to compare the two is something different. Sega is in a class all by themselves. they have the greatest sports games!, Well EAgames is pretty darn close.

i was in EB about two days ago and this little kid was playing the game off the demo machine and i did a double take, i said darn that game is tight! so i watched the kid play and i said this game has awesome sound, graphics(for PS2),camera angles, and facial detail of the players. most of all this game had the Williams sisters in it, which SCPT didn't have, plus they only had one camera angle.

so after work i went home to get SmashCourt and trade it in for Sega's action. i'll never regret it.

sorry Namco, it is time to hang up SmashCourt because Sega Sports Tennis has no competition!

so go out today and BUY, not rent, or borrow from a friend, but BUY SST, ya won't regret it one bit!

Me and my daughter's who are junior tennis players enjoy playing the game when we have time. It was a pretty good purchase.

You have a selection of 8 Top Men Pros and 8 Top Women pros to choose from, and two secret characters that you can unlock after beating the game on the normal mode or above without losing a game. Although I am dissappointed that this is another arcade simulation like Virtua Tennis was for the DreamCast, and there is no real Tournaments, or GrandSlams or Tour Mode, the game is very good.

You can create your own player. And play a "Tour" to increase your players attributes. The game is very colorful, the control is easy, the game is fast paced, the graphics are very good, but most of all there is tons of animations and moves to the players. Aggressive moves, defensive moves, etc. The movements of the player are very realistic!

Although is is another Arcade Tennis game, I would buy this game, because it is really fun to play, especially going one on one with a friend in singles or Double mode.

Score one for Sega for coming up with Sega Sports Tennis! This is the best Tennis game currently on any platform. The only thing missing is online play - hopefully next version!
