4.0 out of 5 stars Tennis is only average, but lots of great minigames, December 11, 2011

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sega Superstars Tennis (Video Game)
Sega Superstars Tennis is a mix between two types of games. The tennis itself is only average. You can lob, backhand etc, and each character has some special powers, and they turn the ball almost impossible to catch. It's fun, but not unforgettable. However, the game has a lot of minigames inspired on all the Sega characters presented in the game. Por example, Sonic has some speed tasks, and the Jet Set radio guy needs to paint parts of the field using tennis techniques. There are Sonic, Golden Axe, Samba de Amigo, MonkeyBall and many others minigames and cool scenarios to enjoy.

If you like Sega and tennis, this is a must-have. And kids will probably like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sega Superstars Tennis - PS2, January 15, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sega Superstars Tennis (Video Game)
This review is for the Playstation 2 version. Sega Superstars Tennis is quick, colorful, hilarious, and fun; sort of like the NBA Jam of tennis games. Most of the popuplar Sega characters are hear(most are from the Dreamcast era). The gameplay itself is simple and 'arcadish'. You've got the Topspin and Slice shots and that's pretty much it. You can perform a Dropshot or a Smash but only using either the Topspin or Slice shots. The characters' response seems a bit delayed when you press a button. But once you've got the timing down, it shouldn't be a problem.

Each character has his or her own strength(the typical stuff like speed or power, etc). But the actual difference during gameplay seems negligible. So using one character to another feels a bit like you are using the same character outside of the visual differences. The gameplay feels fast and the match moves at a good pace. The various courts are overly colorful and can distract from where the ball is hit. The various characters can sound a bit annoying while they are celebrating after they win. There is a special charge move that can be performed once you fill up your gold star and trigger it.

There are many many modes in this game including PLANET SUPERSTARS, MATCH, TOURNAMENT, and GAMES. In Planet Superstars, you venture to various well-known Sega franchises and play a bunch of mini-games on a tennis court. These can inlude collecting rings, dodging bombs, or knocking fire-tennis balls onto zombies. Beating a challenge will open up unlockables including extra characters or more soundtracks. Match is a single game with either singles or doubles. Tournament also includes singles or doubles. Games is a collection of 8 new mini-games from Sega titles.

There are various options that can toggled including game difficulty, camera angle, music volume, autosave, brightness, etc. The tennis itself isn't particularly deep so all the extras extend the life of this game. Two-player mode is pretty fun with some of the challenge games. Overall this game is fast-paced and fun. The Sega characters are cool but can sound annoying. Great as a party game too. I got a nice low price from Amazon Warehouse deals and am very pleased with this purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sega Superstars Not That Great!!!, January 9, 2009

The game play is kinda sketchy and characters are hard to control. Contrast on some levels is pathetic. Not a fan of this game.
