Sega has done a major rewrite of the app and eliminated much of the invasive permissions and some other questionable built in code. The app now only has:
* Modify or delete the contents of your USB Storage
* Full network access
* View network connections
* My original list of permission is shown below in the original review

In addition they have removed Flurry Analytics and Urban Airship from the code. It still contains Amazon InApp Billing and Samsung InApp billing but the Google InApp billing has been removed. I still don't like that the app contains InApp purchases but for some people they may not care. Just take care that you secure the ability to make InApp purchases if your children play on your tablet.

These changes are not an update and I had to delete my original download of the app and reinstall it and "lo and behold" they did a major cleanup for the better. I have raised my ranking to 4 stars from 1 star but I held back a star for the IAP features as they are quite extensively built into the app.

Here is my original review:

It always seems the bigger the software company the more they think that it OK for them to take your personal data or to charge you more and more for a game using In App Purchases. This is a cute game with good graphics and it is fairly easy to play but you should know what else is in the game.

This game is just loaded to take as much data from you as possible. It contains Flurry Analytics that scans your device and transmits data to the developer. Its power to take data is enhanced by the permissions you accepted into your device when you said yes, please install the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonic Jump March 2, 2013

This game controls very well using the tilt functionality of the Kindle fire. This is one game on this system that does not really need a controller. Also the graphics look as good as Sonic 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the Doodle Jump you expect it to be February 27, 2013
In 2005, Sonic Jump was introduced to the mobile game library. It shared the many elements of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, of course, except for RUNNING. Yeah, that's right! Sonic doesn't run here, rather does he hop across floating platforms into the horizon (Actually, through 6 zones)! In 2007, there was Sonic Jump 2, but it was a large disappointment because it was really Sonic Jump AGAIN, except without its pointless story "cutscenes", and the bosses take more hits.

Finally, Sonic Jump rises onto smartphones (iOS/Android), causing many people to incorrectly state it as a Doodle Jump clone. However, I have got to say that it was easily worth the risk, because Sonic Jump is AWESOME!

This isn't the same Sonic Jump that arrived onto Java-based mobile phones back in the mid-2000s, but rather is it an all-new sequel, filled with at least 4 zones (I think they are still implementing them in via updates...), with a whopping ELEVEN acts/levels per zone! Not to mention, there's also an Arcade mode, which allows Sonic to go up to the sky as high as you possibly can!

The basic gameplay is pretty simple, yet very addicting. You control Sonic as he automatically jumps across various levels and obstacles, and even kills any defenseless enemies in his path while curled up into a ball. Later obstacles can include projectiles, spikes, solid platforms, etc, adding in variety to what was already kinda fun.

My only real complaint with Sonic Jump is the boss battles with series' villain Dr. Robotn....Eggman. All Eggman does is wait in the background for you to get attacked (and perhaps shoot projectiles from the distance), and then comes back into the action after a little bit. There's not too much variety in the bosses themselves, and they overstay their welcome.

But otherwise, this is a really great Sonic game! Definitely get it for your smartphone!

24 hours later, SONIC JUMP has received a MASSIVE cleanup job by the dev team. It removes ALL those eye-twitching permissions AND code! Holy smokes!!

Permissions are now minimal, and code-wise, Playhaven is gone, Flurry Analytics is gone, Urban Airship is gone. All gone! Frankly, the sheer speed in removing these code modules is staggering. Still have the IAP, but as mentioned, it's just gratuitous buying of rings, something you can grind out yourself in replay value, and an aspect that can be quite easily ignored.

So on the whole, SONIC JUMP is NOW a COMPLETELY WORRY-FREE game.

Big note, however. This permission & code cleanup did not show up as an UPDATE. I had to uninstall and then re-install SONIC JUMP from my cloud to show this new version. Also, this game is now a bit wishy-washy about consistently running OFFLINE, sometimes needing to be online, sometimes not.

I have a few automatic red flags when it comes to permissions, meaning "Uh, No Way!"... and one of them are in this game:

*Get notified that the operating system has finished booting

Also known as RUN AT STARTUP. Unless the app is a clock/calendar or an ongoing file watcher (like AVG) or at least something that necessitates continual monitoring of system time or file state, this permission should never be present.
