A Must Read for any Segmented Turner,
By
This review is from: The Art of Segmented Wood Turning: A Step-by-Step Guide (Paperback)
I'm a segmented turner who sells his turnings through a gallery, and I just got a hold of Tibbetts' books. In my view, it is the best book to date written on this subject. He is without question one of the most adept artists in segmented design, and he is exceedingly generous in laying out his extraordinary techniques and methods in this field. This book will likely advance this art form considerably.
Tibbetts' writing is easy to read, though I would say the material is aimed more at the intermediate to advanced crafts-person. Woodworkers at any level will find the information useful, and the examples of Tibbetts' designs are beautiful, inspirational and unparalled in this field. It's a bit humbling, really. I am personally grateful to the author.

Expertly written by Malcolm Tibbets (a professional wood turner specializing in segmented turning), The Art of Segmented Wood Turning: A Step-by-Step Guide is a how-to manual meant especially for readers with some woodworking experience. Engineering and mathematical knowledge is not required, but familiarity with woodworking machinery and basic lathe-turning skills are presumed. The Art Of Segmented Wood Turning walks the reader through basic tips, tricks, and techniques, from knowing the properties of wood to stave construction to lamination skills, building portholes, and much more. Full-color illustrations throughout reveal sample projects and more masterpieces possible with skill and practice. The images of creations are beautiful simply to page through, and the instructions are written in a down-to-earth, no-nonsense style that is easy to grasp quickly. Highly recommended for woodworkers seeking to raise the bar of their personal expertise.

This is a great book. Written in a very methodical, logical and clear style. Everything that is needed to turn some of Tibbet's magnificent bowls is included and he makes it all look so straight forward.
The author has taken the time to not assume a great deal of design experience, and outlines the design method for some of his nicest bowls, followed by a step by step guide to realising the form. The only requisit is that you have a lathe and wood turning experience - everything else, he provides, including the enthusiasm and mentoring. What I most admire is the willingness of such artists to share their work. I suspect this has something to do with his philosophy "Sharing leads to innovation..." nothing could be more true. Alex

I just started turning segmented bowls 6 weeks ago - I started turning about 5 months ago. The turning club I joined recommended this book if I could only get one and Ray Allen's if I wanted two. I got both. Ray's seems more for advanced turners to me. This one sits by my table and I constantly refer to it as I'm building my first trys at segementing.
Highly recommend for a beginner like me. Helps you through all the tough spots and also helps to ask the right questions of other club members. If you don't belong to a club - join now.

I first became interested in segmented turning when I came accross a tutorial surfing the web. I made a segmented bowl based on the tutorial with disappointing results. Following that, I purchased this book. After reading the book, I created a detailed segmented vase with a feature ring that came out great! (...)
This book has great coverage of everything from tools to safety to techniques and jigs. The full color picture of the projects are astounding. Anyone interested in this art must have this book.

This book is extremely well written and easy to understand with its great attention to detail. The photos and writings in this book are very detailed from beginning to end. Its truly like taking a course having an instructor explaining to you its that well written. Read the book, the guy is a natural born teacher. The book is printed on high quality sturdy pages. the photos are great. The book is so well detailed that every doubt or question i had was always answered within a page and a half. no questions were unanswered. He tells you how to turn with minimal tools and without complex formulas. If your just starting out get this book it could save you lots of money time and heartache. this book could be used by intermediate turners as well. This is the most detailed and best written instructional book i have ever read with exception of an html book.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I purchased this book. I'm sure it is great instruction for advanced turners who have completed many segmented projects. If you are new to segmented turning "this is not the book for you" It would not be fair to the Author to rate this book poorly, although I do believe some indication of its advanced nature should be noted in the description. I'll put this book on the shelf and find a book that really explains segmented wood turning for the beginner.
