Plastic , soulless love songs for the masses, July 4, 2009
Sakis Rouvas has always been wonderful to look at but not much to listen to . Having been around since 1992 and now approaching his forties , the pop star seems to be on a quest to win time and stay forever goodlooking and youthful ....but is he interested in contributing anything noteworthy to pop music , greek or international ?...
... nah , not really . An album of his gets released every now and then , then quickly gets forgotten while nowone seems to remember a tune or like one specifically , yet ask any greek female ( his target audience ) and often male and she/he will tell you that Rouvas is super talented and also a great person in character .
Album number ten " Se Eho Eroteyti " is mostly filled with love ballads so syrupy that could send a diabetic to the grave at first listen . Rouvas' voice has always been his biggest weakness , a screeching instrument that hasn't got any huskier or more melodic with the pass of time . Overdramatic hit single " Se Eho Eroteyti " is nothing next to the corny " Prospatho Na Allaxo " or " Gia Esena Egw Boro " in which the singer doesn't blush when singing that " for you i'll make the weather change / i'll make mountains meet / ill make the trees blossom in the mid of winter ..." . Rouvas approach to the dance floor is not much better , whether on the euro-trash of " Mes Tis Vitrines Kito " or the arabic flavored " Cairo " which must be the most awful thing he ever sang .
The problem here is not the album itself . Rouvas is not the first nor the last to release superficial pop music . Boybands and handsome pop stars are international phenomenon that has for a long long time now . Though while in other places their careers are short lived and then a new , fresher face emerges , greeks have somehow put all their hopes for a possible international music success by a greek artist on this man , not giving any of their attention or money to anybody else trying to break through . There was a cypriot boy band called One for example , who had released many popular ( equally trashy ) hit singles in the late 90's but never did experienced even in the slightest way , the kind of admiration Rouvas has been enjoying for the biggest part of his two-decade career .
At the first few years of his career , the saying was that " he might not have a good voice , but he puts on a great show " . Nowadays it's an overall thumbs up . Yet the focus has always been on Rouvas' personal , social and sentimental life . Every step the singer takes drives fans and tabloid crazy . As for the music , well nowone gives a damn . And this is the supposely most important pop artist of this country , a man who was included in the closing ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and was selected twice ( withought allowing other artists to compete ) to represent Greece in the ( unbelievably popular at least here ) eurovision song contest .
Simple fact is that Greece is happy to remain hermetically closed in it's own bubble , with a number of untalented pop idols ( Despina Vandi is also one of the first that comes to mind ) and a small industry aggresively keeping them under the spotlight .
