I was surprised how big this clock is. It's about 4" X 4" and almost 2" thick. The build quality is not as sharp looking as I thought it would be, based on the photo. The controls are OK, but I was hoping for an easier on/off switch. Only the snooze and light are activated by the big button on top. To actually turn the alarm off, you have to find a small sliding switch on the back side. My biggest complaint though is that the alarm is extremely loud. I've had to tape a cloth over the hole in the housing where the sound comes out to dampen it. This has helped some, but it's still too loud and the cloth does not improve the looks. I guess I could sit down and figure out how to open the housing and muffle the sound from the inside, but it's not obvious how to get it open, and I could only summon the motivation to go to this kind of trouble if the clock were as cute as it looks in the picture.

    PROS:
    Comes with AA battery inside
    Seiko ascending alarm
    Solid construction
Snooze button that also lights up ENTIRE dial making it easy to see at night
Nice size, not quite travel size BUT could certainly be packed for travel
MAIN REASON I BOUGHT THIS CLOCK (besides it being on sale):
Although the dial isn't LIT UP all the time at night, it is very, very dimly illuminated so that in the pitch black you CAN see where it is, then you can reach over and hit the snooze button to light up the face.

    CONS:
Average looks, but I am getting used to it
Alarm on/off switch very small on back of clock
Same gadget on back of clock for setting both alarm (in, and twist either direction) and time (pull out and twist)

I gave this 5 stars because it is a high quality clock that performs its function and is a whole lot better than a lot of other clocks out there. I would not pay $42.50 for it, but I would and did pay a lower price which I feel was a very fair deal. In fact, I bought three (3) for various uses because the price was right.

This is a recent purchase therefor my comments do not span a great deal of time. The strength of this clock is its silent second hand which cannot be heard while sleeping. The dial is clear and can be seen at night without the built in light. The alarm and snooze function work well. The case is basic and plastic but adequate considering the price point. The cover to the compartment housing the single battery does not fit well and therefor it does rattle when picked up.

The size is larger than what I have been accustomed to since I had a BRAUN alarm clock for many years. The Braun clock was superb and many years ago was considerably more expensive than this Seiko. I would have gladly spent triple the price of this Seiko to buy an updated version of the Braun but Braun is no longer making alarm clocks.

All factors considered, this Seiko is an excellent clock for the money.

The main reason I bought this alarm was the promise of it being QUIET and it is. No ticking sound to drive you crazy on those sleepless nights. Although in the still of the night you can still hear somewhat of a very faint gear-like noise, you really must concentrate hard to hear it. I was surprised at how loud the alarm was, but it's not "heart-attack-inducing". I sleep very soundly so I need something loud to wake me up. The progressive alarm function does not pertain to the loudness of the alarm, but rather to the number of beeps it emits. It reaches the maximum sustained "beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep..." sound in a few seconds only. It is definitely bigger than a travel alarm clock but more decorative. About 4x4 inches and 2 inches deep. Yes, the casing is plastic but it still looks nice. I don't see how anyone could expect metal at this price. Be aware that the metallic colour does not go all around. It's just on the front and top. The sides and backing are black. You can also get one with white sides and backing. Be sure to check the specified colour when you order. When I wake up, whatever clock I have, I feel the urge to WHACK it to silence it. Feels good... If you whack the top button on this one, you will only be setting the snooze function. You must remember to shut off the alarm completely using the small switch in the back. A pain for some people, but I don't mind. I developed the reflex. Whack, get up, turn off. Lights up nicely when you push that same top button. Very easy to read. Battery included. All in all a good deal for people looking for complete silence to fall asleep.

I remember when the Seiko name stood for quality, but this clock is a giant piece of junk! The one I received must not be the same as others received, otherwise they would not have rated it so high. It's made in china of cheap plastic, not the "Silver-tone metallic case" finish advertised. So cheap is the construction that I only had it 10 seconds before the stem broke in my hand as I tried to set the time! In order to set the time, you must pull the stem out while turning. (Push it in to set the alarm time) That's when it popped off in my hand! I guess I should be glad it broke now, rather than when the return period expired.

I'm very disappointed, because the ad seems to show it in a very good light, and the reviews are great. It has all the features I wanted in an alarm clock, and the ad picture shows a clean, simple, beautiful design. Too bad, now I will not even consider a Seiko clock again. Sent it back immediately. Buy this if you want a similar experience.
