Attractive but complicated, August 4, 2008
I love the look of this watch--it's exactly the look in an analog-digital that I wanted. (And I looked at hundreds of watches before settling on this one.) When I travel, the different cities around the bezel are more than just decorations. I haven't used the timing ring yet (had the watch a couple months now), but it's functional too. Drawbacks: (1) Digital readouts are hard to see in lower light or at an angle, but maybe this adds to the classy look since others can't see you have a digital watch under the analog hands. There's no back light for night viewing, just luminescent hands that quickly lose their glow. (2) It's just inexcusably complicated to do anything with this watch. I've had digital watches for over 20 years, but this one doesn't seem intuitive. I've resorted to keeping the PDF file of the instruction manual on my laptop to remind me how to work the various features--especially when I travel to other times zones. So this watch is not as useful as all my old Timexes for timing pizza in the oven, timing a swimming or walking exercise session, double checking the speedometer on a rental car, or adjusting quickly to a new time zone or dual time display. Nonetheless, it's functional enough and classy enough I still really like it. (3) This is also really inexusable: the sounds are so quiet that I can't hear them in my daily activities. I tried them on my kids, thinking maybe I'm justing getting old. But like me they could barely hear them even with the watch close to their ears and all other sounds in the room turned off. This means the count-down timer and alarm are worthless on this watch. Kind of annoying, since I bought it to have a really nice looking watch that could still do the things I've come to expect with my watches. (4) Lastly, and no big deal, like other reviewers said, the band links had to be removed by a jeweler to make the watch fit my wrist. I took out two links to fit my medium to large sized wrist. Bottom line--I'm disappointed in the complicated controls and loss of functions that should not be a problem for a premier watch company to address. But I love the look and feel of this watch and appreciate that it does more than just tell the hour and minute. And I take my old Timex along on trips to swim with and wake me up in motel rooms.
