Product Description

SEIKO 5 - the meaning of the "5" A great marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. Please note that some SEIKO 5's are in fact SEIKO 4's, if the "Day" function is omitted, then the Caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels as opposed to the 21 Jewels in the 7S26. Please note that all these movements beat at a rate of 21'600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second). As a comparison, an ETA 2824-2 beats at 28'800 bph or 8 bps. A Miyota 82xx beats at 21'600 bph. Why do I mention these three movements? Because they are found in probably 80% of all inexpensive automatic wrist watches. A market share that is huge, yet challenged these days (2006) by an increasing share of inexpensive China Made automatic movements An automatic watch (also called a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch, typically with a balance wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm, instead of having to be wound manually every day. Whereas a quartz watch is powered by electricity, a mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time

I was tired of installing new batteries on my old Seiko watch every year or so. It was a pain to open the back case or to take it to the store and let them change the battery for me at a cost of about $10.00 every time. The last time I took my old watch to the store they forgot to put back the rubber seal around the back cover, and dust and suet got into the watch. What a mess!
I found this Seiko watch at Amazon super reasonable priced. It is beautiful to look at and its time is accurate all the time. It winds itself with every move of your arm and keep on working when you take it off for about a day or so. No more worries for the batteries anymore. Very good looks and quality. Will last a lifetime. (I threw my old battery Seiko in the trash)

Have had a Seiko 5 for 42 years and it sill keeps perfect time. Only reason for getting the new one is the old timer isn't waterproof any longer. Have every reason to think the new one will be just as good. Hope anyone getting this watch realizes it cannot be wound manually. Taking links out of the band is a bit tricky, but not a problem when you see how it works.

I just received this watch last week and really like it so far. I am a smaller-sized guy, so bear in mind that my wrists are also smaller than most. Having never adjusted a watch band on my own before, I had a difficult time until I found a video showing me how to do it (I posted the link here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1OOXYS2CVXJ6V/ref=cm_cr_rev_detmd_pl?ie=UTF8&asin=B008EWSA6W&cdForum=FxUOIWKNRIXVKQ&cdMsgID=Mx1HPACO5F4QPOO&cdMsgNo=1&cdPage=1&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=TxI43Y3RBPQGO4&store=watches#Mx1HPACO5F4QPOO). Since I didn't have a tiny screwdriver handy, I taped a quarter to my thumb and used it to apply orthogonal pressure to a paperclip end I had unbent to 90 degrees.

I really like the look of the watch - it can be worn casually, but it also looks good with a sport coat or formal suit. It also has enough weight that I can tell I am wearing a watch if I think about it, but it is not heavy.

My only point of discontent is that the stored "charge" doesn't last more than a day on the watch I received. A part of this is a limitation of all automatic watches - I understand that even the most expensive automatic watch does not last for more than a day and a half. But, it would have been nice if the watch I received could have sustained a full 24 hours on its stored charge (I bought it with the intention of alternating it with another leather-banded automatic watch that I am waiting to arrive). Essentially, this means that unless you wear this watch daily, expect to have to check and reset the time every day you decide to wear it. As an example, I took it off at around 2am this morning after wearing it all day and evening. When I checked on it this evening, it had stopped just before 9pm.

I am very pleased with my Seiko 5 #SNKL41 Seiko watch. It was shipped expeditiously and it keeps accurate time. I had the wrist band adjusted but it was done in a few minutes while I waited.

Beautiful watch. Works very well. Would have given 5 stars had it come with extra links. It was 1 link shy of fitting my husband. Now, we must find a Seiko dealer to have one added.

Nice looking. Solid wrist band. Keeps time well, but does not self-wind as well as other watches I have had. I often find it has lost power overnight.
