Seiko Men's SPC001 Sportura Retrograde Chronograph Watch

I debated a lot before buying this watch, because it is quite different from most of my watches. However...

1 - I like the mushroom-shaped crown. It gives good control, has very solid clicks when you pull it out (unlike a couple of swiss - Luminox & Marathon - watches I own), but doesn't bang the skin during running or other vigorous activity.

2 - I like the square buttons for the stopwatch. Again, very positive clicks and very smooth.

3 - The 1/10 and 1/100 of a second hands spin for the first 3 minutes the stopwatch is used - the orange 1/100s being a total blur. Seems like a waste of battery power, but it looks kind of cool.

4 - Better lume at night than one would expect from the pictures. Not as bright as a dive watch, but very precise looking and readable in the early morning.

5 - The 40 minute stopwatch resets back at 41 minutes and continues to run for a total of 2 hours. I like this - it is easier to read than a 60 min dial and I don't need to time things over 2 hours. If you do, buy a different watch.

6 - The watch looks big but wears light. It covers a fair bit of space on the wrist, but is thin so it doesn't flop around. The first part of the band next to the watch is angled down...helps to keep the watch in one place. I have a small wrist, and had no trouble sizing it to fit.

7 - I like the fact that there are no wasted subdials. No '24-hour indicator' like Citizen tends to use, a very readable chronograph display, etc. It has enough features to show it isn't the run of the mill watch, but it doesn't overload the dial with geek stuff.

Overall: it looks better in reality than it does in pictures. It looks like a dress watch, but works well during running, cycling, etc. It is very comfortable to wear, is of high quality and well thought out. I docked it a star because I like a rotating bezel - although I knew it didn't have one when I bought it. Amazon has a great price, delivered in 24 hours for $4. If you want to time long events or like having an alarm or second time zone...this watch is not for you. If you want a massive watch, this is a bad choice. If you want a large watch that is very comfortable, easy to read, high-tech design and very accurate stopwatch - this is a great choice.

It was hard for me to make up my mind about which watch I wanted to buy this time. I narrowed my choices down to either a Tag Heuer or this Seiko SPC001. I've already purchased three Tags in my life, which are very good watches, a couple Omegas and a Rolex Datejust.

I wanted something that wasn't too expensive so that I could casually wear it and not be very concerned about getting it scratched up, but I wanted something nice as well.

So, I went with this relatively lesser expensive high-end Seiko and ordered it.

I had made up my mind before receiving the watch that if I opened up the box and didn't like it after my first glance at it I would return it to Amazon immediately and buy the much more expensive Tag.

Well, I got this in the mail today and after opening the package from Amazon I have to say this Seiko is one of the most gorgeous sports type watches I have ever seen. I couldn't believe how nice this thing looked. I decided right away that I wanted to keep this. I put it on and it looks great. It really is a 10 in term of looks. I showed a few people in my office and they were really impressed at how nice this looked.

Needless to say, this Seiko is high-end in looks and the fit and finish are superb.......definitely a keeper.

To me this is my best watch ever in this price level,the configuration of the band adjust the watch to be centered all the time,and the display is fine,i'm glad i got this watch.

I was very impressed by the presence this watch had when I took it out of the box. The photos don't do the piece justice! A great mixture between sporty and classy. It's not overly shiny and there are equal parts polished and brushed metal. The dial resembles a car's dashboard, also.

I've been stalking this watch for over a year and I finally decided to take the plunge and buy it. Originally when it came out it was very expensive (over $600). I went to a few department stores to see it in person during the many Christmas sale events that were going on and the lowest I saw it priced was at $505.00 (with all the discounts included). That being said, this was a great deal at just over $300. The watch looks MUCH better in person. I've read other reviewers say that the photos don't do it justice. I agree with them. When I received it, I was definitely impressed. It's just the right balance between sporty and professional. I can wear it to work as well as when go out. It has a great timing feature that makes it much easier to read than the traditional chronograph watches (traditional circle design). This one looks like a car dashboard, which I think is really cool. Additionally, I don't really need to time something over 40 minutes, so it works out great for me. You can definitely use this for outdoor sports such as swimming or running, although I personally find this watch too good looking to use for these activities. When I run or swim I just slap on my trusty G-Shock. I've only had this watch for a short time and already I've been getting many compliments on it. I have absolutely no regrets buying this watch. The only thing I wish it had was a backlight. But I knew going in that it didn't have one, so I'm not complaining. It's a great watch for the money and if you're thinking about buying one, I suggest you go for it. You won't regret it!

The pictures of this watch simply do not do it justice. I had ordered from Amazon and received the watch promptly in approximately 1 week (not bad for free shipping). This is simply a gorgeous watch. The SPC001 has a nice weight to it, it actually feels quite heavy and gives the watch a feeling of heft and quality that is oftentimes absent with plastic digital watches of today. The face of the watch diameter is larger than a $0.25 piece and very close to the diameter of a silver dollar. The buttons are solid and have a very nice feel to them. An added benefit that is not mentioned is the brushed steel band w/ the polished stainless steel accents. This provides the band w/ extra durability from scratches and will help preserve the beauty and luster of the band. Prior to purchasing this watch, I was going to purchase a Tag Heuer, but opted for this watch and I sure am glad of my decision at this point in time. Very nice watch. The only reason why I dinged this review one star is the absence of military time on the dial/face. I work w/ the 24hr period and need military time, but this is only a very small inconvenience for an awesome watch.

I love my watch and I am happy that I ordered it at this store. The watch came very fast and I perfect condition. The only thing I missed was a decent bill for the garantee. Anyway if some day I would like to order an other watch it would definitly be a Seiko and probably again at this shop.

cons: steel strap prone to scratches

This is a large, but thin, watch. Some sport models are dubbed "tuna cans" because they are so thick. This piece is very thin, yet still solid and hefty. Very comfortable to wear. Two issues, though, have me not wearing it often:

1. The hour markers and silver trim circle around the minute totalizer makes reading the hands difficult - almost Breitling busy - I prefer a much more easy readable dial.

2. the minute totalizer is non-standard at 40 minutes (why 40? the standard is either 10 or 30 minutes). The exra minutes are compressed into a dial that is only 2/3 of a circle. It is again difficult to easliy read the accumulated minutes - too imprecise for acutal sport use.

While the 1/100 is great, I can never read off the stopped time counters in an event (racing, running, etc) without having to stop and carefully see where the minute timer has stopped.

Looks great, feels great, but not useful as a sport chronograph and even standard time is not clear - the dial is just too busy.

Awesome, handsome watch. The minute hand sometime obstructs the stopwatch but it is not a big deal. I recommend this watch.
