Editorial Reviews

Jose Antonio Carlos de Seixas was both a virtuoso keyboard performer and a prolific composer with almost 100 authenticated harpsichord sonatas to his credit. His sonatas share something of the advanced form and colourful texture of his older contemporary

Carlos de Seixas (1704 -- 1742)was a Portuguese composer, much of whose work was destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake or otherwise neglected. There are also questions about the authenticity of some of the works attributed to this composer. Of the many keyboard sonatas de Seixas composed, about 100 survive. This CD offers the listener a welcome opportunity to sample the music of this neglected composer. Deborah Halasz, a young Brazilian harpsichordist and pianist, peforms a selection of 13 sonatas on the harpsichord. Her instrument is a modern replica of a 1734 harpsichord, and it has a clear, strong sound highly suitable to Seixas's music.

This is the first CD of a projected recording of Seixas's complete surviving keyboard sonatas on Naxos. It complements Naxos's ongoing projects of recording the keyboard sonatas of Scarlatti, on the piano by a variety of artists, and the keyboard sonatas of Padre Antonio Soler, performed on the harpsichord by Gilbert Rowland.

Seixas composed binary style keyboard sonatas of the type immortalized by Domenico Scarlatti (1685 -- 1787). In fact the two composers knew each other, beginning in 1723 when Scarlatti moved to Lisbon. Seixas studied with Scarlatti for a time. Although they have a character of their own, Seixas's works are similar to the early works of Scarlatti. Scarlatti's sonatas deepened and developed to a great degree as he worked with the form over the years.

Seixas's sonatas, as evidenced on this CD, are lively, virtuosic, highly rhythmic, and show a strong degree of originality. They tend to use heavy and repeated chords in the bass and have a rather straight-ahead quality. They lack the quirkiness and idiosyncracies for which Scarlatti is known.

Until recently, a search for keyboard music by Portugal's Carlos de Seixas (1704-42) would turn up next to nothing: a couple of deleted items and maybe a few sonatas in anthologies featuring others by Scarlatti or perhaps Antonio Soler. A sense of his music would be hard to gather up, and it would require some expense.

This CD changes all that. It also makes one wish that some Lisbon dig would unearth more of the nearly 700 Seixas pieces for harpsichord that were supposedly lost during Lisbon's great 1755 earthquake, a few years after his death, especially if some of them matched the level of these sonatas. Naxos reports plans to release those that have survived: the liner notes mention a collection of eighty - thirteen of which appear here, played very ably by Brazilian virtuoso Débora Halász. At least five more Seixas CDs should gradually be released, which is good news indeed for baroque music fans.

Seixas was the cathedral organist at his native Coimbra from the age of fourteen, but at sixteen he was appointed Vice Master organist in Lisbon's Royal Chapel - the Chapel Master being none other than Domenico Scarlatti. During Scarlatti's five years in Portugal, he taught and was said to admire young Carlos, who eventually replaced him as Chapel Master and harpsichord teacher at Lisbon's royal court. A Portuguese dictionary from 1760 reports that, upon first witnessing Seixas' playing, Scarlatti said to the youth that he ought to teach him, Scarlatti, rather than the other way around, as the Portuguese monarch had commanded the Italian master. Seixas died early, at 38, but was already regarded as the highest-ranking Portuguese musician of his time.

Playful yet soothing
As many of the works produced by Naxos a fine quaility production of a lesser known artist who is able to be rediscovered by the public and whose work will be enjoyed by anyone who should purchase the CD of Carlos de Seixas. The movements in the Harpischord Sonatas 1, are lively and flow very well and are pleasure for their listening enjoyment.
