I owned this as an LP in the early 70's, somewhere along the way lost it, really missed it at odd moments, even though some of the politics expressed in the lyrics had evolved significantly since it was recorded. Mostly, I loved Elaine Brown and how she captured the aspirations of the BPP at the time, and her rich -- and righteous! -- voice. When her autobiography came out, I eagerly grabbed it up, LOVED it, and of course loaned it out and never saw it again. So I bought that again when I re-found Seize the Time, just haven't gotten around to re-reading it yet. But I remember the book as being incredibly entertaining, maybe especially so for people like myself who had been very politically active in the same period she was, and her clear-eyed description of being a woman at the center of the action in the BPP. It was a great read. The album is uneven but compelling. Obviously her vision deepened and evolved in the time that elapsed between album and book, but her musicality stays with you for a long time, years in my case, and the combination of all she evokes lyrically and her truly stunning vocal is nothing short of haunting.
