Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Tory Brennan and her “viral” friends, who contracted heightened, wolflike senses during an experiment gone wrong (Virals, 2010), attempt to find a female pirate’s buried treasure in this second outing. The quartet is motivated to seek the booty when budget cuts threaten their parents’ university jobs in Charleston, South Carolina. Afraid their “pack” will be split apart, they steal maps, explore hidden booby-trapped caverns beneath the city, and decrypt codes leading to a spooky, uninhabited barrier island, even as they are pursued by nefarious fellow treasure seekers. The action is nonstop and will keep readers glued to this satisfying mystery. Grades 6-9. --Karen Cruze

Review

"I would highly recommend it ... 5 stars" Guardian "If you like Bones, you'll love Virals" James Patterson "Kathy Reichs gets it dead right with sharp writing and a plot that throws a bunch of very real teens into a deadly adult world ... I loved it and I'm sure fans of Alex Rider will love it too" Anthony Horowitz "Mystery ... fantasy ... science ... and heart-stopping action - this book is DANGEROUS. After I read Tory Brennan's first adventure, I wanted more, more, MORE" R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

Kathy Reichs, like her fictional creation, Temperance Brennan, is forensic anthropologist for the province of Quebec. She is Vice President of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, serves on the Canadian National Police Services Advisory Council, and is one of only fifty-six forensic anthropologists certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. A professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Dr. Reichs now divides her time between Charlotte and Montreal. Deja Dead, her debut novel, brought her fame when it became a New York Times bestseller and won the 1997 Ellis Award for Best First Novel. In 2007 Break No Bones was short- listed for the Ellis Award for Best Novel. Kathy Reichs is the inspiration for the television drama Bones; her latest novel featuring Temperance Brennan is Devil Bones. Her newest release, 206 Bones, is due out in the summer of 2009

"Seizure.." is a great book and the plot keeps you interested all the way through.

I buy all new books by Kathy Reichs and while this one is really written for young people, it is still a good read for adults.
C. Cole
I wish that the author made tory and one of the guys like Ben or Chance fall in love.

Positive: Pirates! Is there anything more exciting than digging for buried treasure? I love how Kathy Reichs incorporates both legend and fact into her story, then twists them so her Virals have treasure to chase.

Positive: Tory. She's obviously the Alpha of her pack, bossing those boys around and getting them to do what she wants. She has good intentions -- she doesn't want the pack to break up, especially since they're only just learning about their powers and they're afraid to be apart, just in case something major happens. Plus, she's got such a sarcastic wit and an amazing brain, just like her famous aunt.

Positive: The connection to Temperance Brennan (Bones). It's a little thing, I know, but I really love when there's a crossover whether it be between series or, in this case, genres. It's like you're in on a little secret, if you've read the author's other works.

Wish: That Tory didn't seem to be talking to the reader at time. I don't know what it is about that style but it jars me and, because of that, it takes a bit longer to slide into the flow of the story.

Overall: A fast-paced thriller, SEIZURE grips readers and pulls them along for a wild ride.

Seizure (Virals #2) by Kathy Reichs

I LOVE this series! It's like Nancy Drew meets Maximum Ride. Seizure is the second book in the YA Virals series by Kathy Reichs author of the Temperance Brennan (Bones) novels. This series is inventive, intelligent and fun.

In Virals Tory and her friends are infected with a genetically altered parvo virus that affects their DNA and gives them special powers.

In Seizure the gang is still trying to get the hang of what is happening to their bodies as well as searching for Anne Bonny's pirate treasure.

I truly cannot wait for the next installment.

Seizure is the second book in the Virals series by Ms. Reichs. Tory and her friends are still not fully in control of their `flares' yet and are practicing as often as they can. When the kids find out they might have to be separated due to budget cuts and closing of the facility where their parents work, Tory wants to find a way to stick together and save their parents' jobs. While at one of the society functions she absolutely hates, Tory learns the story of the female pirate, Anne Bonny, and the treasure she may have secreted close by. Can Tory and her friends find the treasure first and save the day or will the others out for the big score who have no problem taking care of anyone in their way prevail...?

Seizure is a great addition to this series! I felt that Seizure is actually a better story than Virals, but you couldn't get there without the path set down in Virals. I loved the spice of pirate history and treasure brought to life. I hope it encourages readers to do some research into the wild history of pirates in general and female pirates in particular. A modern day Nancy Drew with a science fiction twist, Seizure is full of mystery, adventure, and great characters - a fun and engaging read!

Again, I'm not a young adult but a grown up adult and I loved this book! I just finished it and hope to see more books coming from Brenden and Kathy Reichs about the "Virals". This could be a great series...sort of a Nancy Drew teams up with the Hardy Boys (which I cut my reading teeth on) but throw in super powers and a 21st Century setting complete with iPhones and lots of Googling and WHAM, a series worth waiting for with each book. I thought "Seizure" was even better than "Virals" the first book. The teens learn more about their powers and get into a really exciting adventure. I didn't find a single part of it boring or slow. I really hope there are more books in the wings for these teens. They are awesome!

This is a great series for junior high thru high school age. But, in this case an adult was reading it and he enjoyed it as well.
