Book Description

December 2007 Bulletins of the Royal Tropical Institute
* Complete overview of Western printed sources reporting on the history of Sintang

In 2004 the government of Sintang in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and the Tropenmuseum agreed on the cooperation in a project towards the realization of a new cultural center “Pusat Kebudayaan Sintang”. This center will be dedicated to the presentation and preservation of the area’s rich cultural and historical heritage. As a community center, it will link contemporary arts, crafts and culture to information about the past. The official opening of the center, including a museum, will be in October 2008.

This Bulletin, published in Bahasa Indonesia and English in one volume, reports on the most important historical events of Sintang as told in Western printed sources, such as travel accounts, history books, maps and archives. These sources present one part of the full history, the Western view. The Bulletin now intends to be an aid for further research in Indonesia on the many other perspectives on the history of Sintang.
