Product Description

Product Packaging: Standard Packaging

"The pocket-sized Sekonic L-308S Flashmate is the smallest and lightest digital light meter in the Sekonic line-up. It is designed to read ambient or flash exposures in either reflected or incident modes, and it displays accurate exposure readings in full, half, or third-stop increments to mirror the exposure settings of today's DSLR and film cameras.

The L-308S delivers accurate exposure readings in full-, half-, or third-stop increments to mirror the exposure displays of most popular cameras. When set to full-stop mode, exposures are displayed in tenth-stop increments with a repeat accuracy of +/- 0.1 EV.

The LCD screen is designed to emulate the look and feel of its bigger brother, the Sekonic L-358 flash meter. Exposure data and related information are displayed using large type and easy-to-read icons, perfectly legible in even low-level lighting conditions.

Incident or reflected light measurement - Reflected light readings are captured at a receiving angle of about 40 degrees for subject readings made at the camera. Slide the L-308S's built-in Lumisphere over the silicon photo diode for incident light exposure readings of three-dimensional subjects. Snap on the included Lumidisc over the sensor for metering flat artwork or measuring contrast and/or exposure ratios within a scene.

Ambient / Flash measurement - Incident or reflected ambient light readings can be made with the L-308S over a wide range of lighting conditions at shutter speeds from 60 seconds to 1/8000th of a second and apertures from f/stops of f/1.4 to f/90.9. Flash at speeds from 1 to 1/500th of a second can be measured cordlessly or wired using a separate accessory PC cord. Flash and ambient readings are automatically calculated to display the proper exposure for the combination.

Accurate measurements - Exposures accurate down to a tenth-of-a-stop for both ambient and electronic flash light readings are available in full-stop mode. The L-308S can also display shutter speeds and apertures in half or third-stop increments to mirror the exposure settings on your camera with a repeat accuracy of +/- 0.1 EV. For cinema applications frame rates can be set from 8 to 128 frames per second. ISO sensitivity can be set from 3 to 8000 in third-stop increments.

Compact size and lightweight - The L-308S is the smallest digital flash meter for reflective and incident light readings in ambient or electronic flash lighting conditions. It is compact and light enough to fit into a shirt pocket, yet versatile enough to meet virtually every photographic demand. The L-308S is powered by a single AA battery and weighs only 3.4 ounces (95g). Its measurements are a compact 2.5""W x 4.3""H x 0.9""D (63mmW x 110mmH x 22mmD).

Accessories - The Sekonic L-308S FlashMate comes with a Lumidisc (with pouch), soft case, strap, synchro terminal cap and an AA battery. It has a full, 1-year warranty, extendable at no charge to 3 years total (in the USA only) after registration, and is backed by our outstanding customer support team.

This meter is dead easy to use, largely because it is not cluttered with features most of us don't need often if ever. This meter is one you put at the subject location or hold in the sun to obtain a single reading. If you want to read various locations in a scene and have your meter provide an "average" reading, this meter is not for you -- you'll have to figure the average in your head.

It has the advantage of using easily obtained and relatively cheap batteries, which in a pinch can be pirated from other devices most of us have around the place, such as small flashlights and TV remote controls.

When I started to look for a new lightmeter, I want something small, reliable, accurate, and can do ambient and flash. This little meter is not the most feature rich, but definitely one of the smaller more compact ones. And there is nothing that will break, unlike some of the units with swivel head. I have used Gossen LunaPro SBC, which is excellent for extreme low light, but a bit bulkier and lack flash capability. I have also used Minolta Flashmeter III and Sekonic L-328. There are definitely other meters out there that can do more tricks, but the small size and low cost of this meter enable me to carry it everywhere. After all, a meter used in the field is better than a meter left in storage.

The Good: Small, easy to use, ok for price

The Bad: No means for user to calibrate meter. I have owned this meter for about 18 months, and have noticed that the calibration has drifted to one complete stop of under exposure, meaning that when I set the camera to ISO 100, the meter needs to be set to ISO 50 to compensate.

This is the cheapest usable digital flash + ambient light meter but it works very accurate and well. If you need spot reflected light metering, this is not your one becouse of the wide angle of view.

Many pro's use this meter so I got one and I'm not disappointed. It's so easy to use and has the basic features that are enough for most people. I've been using mine for 2 years without any problems. The manual says it needs special batteries but I've been using NiMh rechargeables without any problems.

I am using it since a month and I am loving it. I got it to replace an old analog meter. The digital display is definitely nice coming from the analog display. It has all the basic functionalities.

What I like:
- Size and weight
- EV measurement
- AA battery
- Precision, accuracy

What I like less:
- I would question the solidity of the build; sounds a little fragile
- No aperture priority mode
- Needs 2 hands to use ISO selector
- the head doesn't swirl so if I use in reflective mode, I cannot read the display

Overall, great tool. Its bigger brother has more functionalities, but for most of the amateurs it's the perfect tool for accurate light measurement.

This meter isn't as feature rich as some, but it has all the features I need in a small, lightweight package that is as easy to carry in a pocket as it is in a camera bag. It is very accurate, runs forever on 1 AA battery. Lack of Aperture priority would probably be it's biggest weakness, but was certainly not a deal breaker for me. I would have maybe given it a 4 star based on that feature missing, but for the money I will give it 4.5 rounding up to 5
