Editorial Reviews

2011 debut album from this female vocalist from Belgium. Similar in sound to the likes of Duffy and Adele, Selah Sue sings Pop, Soul and Blues songs in English. Album features Cee-Lo Green on the track 'Please' She also appears on Cee-Lo's 2010 album The Lady Killer, WEA

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Debut! June 27, 2011
By Hassink
Format:Audio CD
Selah Sue is a Belgian upcomming artist. After a few LP's this is her first full album and it is mindblowing! Her voice is just unique, the music chill and relaxing without being simplistic or boring. The CD is basicly a compilation of her first singles in combination with the new single 'This World' and a few other songs. The collaboration with Cee-Lo Green is also on this CD.

A summary of the songs:

1. This World: 9,5/10. The first real single from this CD. Really a great start to this CD. It has a great bassline and during the refrain some trumpets kick in and it creats a great effect. Her voice really stands out in this song (like in allmost every song)

2. Peace Of Mind: 9/10. After the great first song, it is followed by another great song. It has a nice interchange between the slower verses and the fast lyrics in the refrain.

3. Raggamuffin: 9,5/10. Also one of her earlier singles, the first I actually heard of her. It is a great song, and a great represantation of her unique sound where she combines her beautiful voice during the verses with an upbeat, ragga-like refrain.

4. Crazy Vibes: 9,5/10. One of her earlier singles. This is a great song about how she started playing music and how great it is, the joy is noticable!

5. Black Part Love 9/10. Another great song with a good combinations of trumpets and a good bassline. The song is about you have to make an effort to view things in a possitive way instead of taking the easy way and say you hate them.

6. Mommy: 7,5/10. A very beautiful tribute of how her mother has always been there during difficult times.

7. Explanations: 8,5/10. A very down to earth song about insecurity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding album.... what a discovery June 15, 2012
Format:Vinyl
Selah Sue (real name: Sanne Putseys) is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter from Belgium. She was, incredibly, only 22 yrs. old when she released this self-titled album last year. If you are not familiar with her music, she brings a mix of reggae and soul, reminding us at times of Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and even Amy Winehouse for good measure.

"Selah Sue" (12 tracks; 47 min.) can be divided into 3 "acts", the first 5 tracks, followed by the middle 4 tracks, concluding with the last 3 remaining tracks. The album's best tracks are front-loaded in the "first act" for sure, starting with the strong lead-off track "This World" (3rd single), the urgent "Piece of Mind" (one of my favorite tracks on here) and also "Raggamuffin" (1st single) and "Crazy Vibes" (2nd single) on which she croons "I was never really into music/Until I was nine years old/But now I can't control myself from grooving/It's time for me to show" and show she does! Incidentally, she wrote or co-wrote most of the songs of the album. Concluding the "first act", "Black Part Love" is the best track on the album for me, an irresitable song sure to bring any wallflower out to the floor, just beautiful. "Act 2" brings several slower songs, including a pensive acoustic ""Mommy" but also "Please", which features Cee-Lo Green on vocals. How they managed to get him on board for this complete unknown and then-unproven Belgian artist, I will never know, and the weird thing is that is isn't even the best track on here, not by a long shot. "Act 3" brings again more upbeat, urgent tracks like the great "Crazy Suffering Style" and "Fyah Fyah".

What an incredible album! Had this been released by a UK or US singer instead of someone in little-known Belgium, I have no doubt this would be a mega-seller around the globe.

5.0 out of 5 stars This girl has soul
If you like raggae and R&B you'll like Selah Sue. She also throws in some rap and a great horn section in some songs. Can't wait to catch her act live.
