5.0 out of 5 stars Selda, the master., April 5, 2008
This review is from: Selda (Audio CD)
Picked up this most-awesome compilation of Selda's music based on description alone (and the cover art/image is intriguing, as well). What arrived in the mail is a rewarding glance at a Turkish artist and 70s music powerhouse--one that made some strong, memorable, funky music. For any crate digger, the beats are out of this world. Plus, the time signatures and chord changes (attention music nerds) will demand your attention time and time again. The recording quality is dubby and lo-fi, but that's part of the charm.

Play loud and often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice!, March 27, 2007
This review is from: Selda (Audio CD)
I've seen this album floating around and never bought it because of the cover. I'd heard some of the songs before on Turkish compliations. But never associated it with Selda. Selda kicks it. It's a solid Turkish album and you won't be disapointed. I'm like "Oh Selda..." It's got some rockers and it's got some nice slower melodies. It's got it all. Don't judge an album by the cover. But now, after hearing it, the cover is mad sweet. And so is what's inside. You'd be a fool to pass this up!

Selda. Reissued. Nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best darn 1970's Turkish psychedelic folk rock..., December 23, 2009

Okay, it's probably the only 1970's Turkish psychedelic folk rock I've ever listened to, but I really liked this album. On the cover it said "cop this joint by any means". I'm not quite so gullible to just go and buy it b/c of that, but I was at amoeba so I tried scanning it and they had it in their system so I listened to it and it really rocked. I wish they had the translation for each song in the liner notes (only for a couple), but besides that I'm really glad I got it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Relevant, July 6, 2009
This review is from: Selda (Audio CD)
I heard a song on NPR back in June of 2009... amazingly relevant today, as this was originally released back in 1976...

A song was "cool" enough to be featured in a skate-boarding video game, and sounds sort of like 'post-punk' type of music with a great bass player and drummer... uhh, again... maybe it sounds sort of like the modern stoner-rock... its great stuff... who cares if you can't understand Turkish... but if you could... the rumor is that she is very social-conscious and this lead her to be wanted by the authorities...

If the Turks were putting out music like this in the 70's... I wonder what other gems are lying around the record-store bin's... time for a visit!!! If you're open-minded about music - it's a decent album that just moves along, song by song --- and could be played up against anything like say, from Dischord Records, for example... yeah - definitely a "finder's keepers" type of album!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, December 20, 2009
This review is from: Selda (Audio CD)
The impact of psychadelia as a cultural force--through the spark plug of the Beatles--eventually spread world wide. In the west this was a pop phonomonon, but in places like Latin America and in this case, Turkey, psych, in all its implications and effects, was truely dicey. These countries were dictatorships; a bohemien game like psych could land you in jail in nations were very bad things happened in jails.

Selda is essentially folk protest psychadelia with a middle eastern twinge. All the world scales and tonics being used by bands like ELO and LEd Zepplin are here.

Selda has a strong voice and the ethnic influance on her folk is pungent. This is not watered down for western ears. Nor does it have the acid rock party time feel of so many other Andy Votel reissues.

But if you think you'll enjoy this protest music with a grain of sand, this is a great album
