Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book has been a labor of love. Originally a 16-page booklet with no photos or illustrations in 1982, the book has grown over the years to this, its final form.

Experiences of the author and other seasoned converters are included. The mistakes we made and lessons we learned he hard way are included so you wont make these same blunders.

Welcome to the world of bus conversions!

About the Author

Ben Rosander first became interested in bus conversions about 1967 when his soon-to-be father-in-law converted an old school bus to move his family to Arkansas.

In 1972, Ben found a classified ad in Popular Science Magazine offering a conversion booklet. He bought the book and with his wife, Robin, converted his first bus-a 1962 GMC sKOOLie.

New to the conversion process, Ben blindly followed the advice given, trusting on the expertise of others which, he says, turned out to be a big mistake. Over the years, he reflected on his experience with the notion that he could write a better book. In 2002 Ben completed the 100-page "Select and Convert Your Bus into a Motorhome on a Shoestring", followed by "Dreams on Wheels: Modern Do-it-Yourself Gypsies" and "Bus Conversion Floor Plans".

His writings have appeared in Bus Conversions Magazine and he is a frequent contributor to numerous bus conversion bulletin boards.

Ben and Robin Rosander reside in Washington State and are the parents of six children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic, July 9, 2008

This review is from: Select and Convert Your Bus into a Motorhome on a Shoestring (Paperback)
I bought this book with some prior knowledge and already owning a school bus. Books like this are often times very basic, as the author needs to get preliminary ideas and concepts down for the reader first. I was disappointed that the author took it no farther than the basics in most of his writing. I found a lot of both the broad and specific information to be obvious, but for some people it may provide great insight.

For those of you who have no idea about where to start in building a bus into a home, then this book is for you. But if you have no idea on where to start, then you probably don't have the skills necessary or the creativity it requires to build a bus. The author even says that you need to be handy in order to do all this. This means that this book is somewhat of a problematic thing because you have to have skills and creativity to undertake such a project as the author says, but if you have those skills and creativity, then you probably don't need this book because you already know where to start on building a bus and are capable of understanding the basic ideas of how to convert a bus.

Granted, the good things that this book has to offer are:
- how to raise the roof of a bus
- cool pictures of already converted buses
- how to diagram the cross section of your bus for building cabinetry
- some mistakes made on previous bus conversions, and how to avoid/overcome them

Bottom Line: It's worth the money for a beginner, but as a beginner you should be acquiring more in depth knowledge about carpentry, metal-working, electronics/wiring, appliances, propane, auto mechanics, etc. This book will help tie these things together in a basic way for wanderlusting bus-builders.

If you are thinking of converting any bus to a motorhome then you should have this book. This book will help you decide what bus is suited to building your motorhome. The one thing I love about this book is it explains the conversion sequence:
It tells you what to do and in what order to do them once your vehicle is ready to be fitted out.The book includes sections on solar energy, accessories, sample floor plans, etc. It also shows various buses that have been converted to show you what can be done to buses. Many photographs and diagrams throughout make this book a valuable bus conversion source. Its definitely a comprehensive guide.
