Editorial Reviews

Review

Twain is the most amusing and graceful of correspondents. Some of his best comic prose is in these letters. (Newsweek )

[An] excellent collection.... What strikes one about the letters is the wonderful flexibility with which Twain used language. He could convey anything—love, indignation, a comic situation, the ruefulness of old age—with seeming naturalness and lack of conscious art. Because of this spontaneity, reading the book, which amounts to an autobiography, gives on an odd feeling of Twain's presence. (The New Yorker )
