Book Description

Carl G. Hempel (1905-1997) was one of the preeminent figures in the philosophical movement of logical empiricism. The essays in this collection come from the early and late periods of Hempel's career. Most of these essays are hard to track down and four of them are appearing in English for the first time. Cumulatively they offer a fresh perspective on Hempel's intellectual development and on the rise and demise of logical empiricism. Richard Jeffrey has prepared the collection for publication, and has supplied introductory surveys to the essays as well as a brief biographical sketch of Hempel.

4.0 out of 5 stars many interesting articles, November 29, 2002
By A Customer
This book is a collection of articles by Hempel since the early 1930s, some of which were previously untranslated or were difficult to find. The books begins with the "carnapian Hempel" (a phase with many phases) and ends with the "kuhnian Hempel". Hempel is lucid and patient, although his observations are sometimes a bit superficial, especially when he frames his mind in 1st order logic and fears to go anywhere beyond.
I particularly liked the article on the content of probability statements.
It is a pity that his paper on "Geometry and empirical science" was not included.

This review is from: Selected Philosophical Essays (Paperback)
A very insightful and comprehensive collection of writings by the german philosopher C.G.Hempel, an author that belongs to the same league of masters like Carnap and Reichenbach , and whose visions on matters like the scientific value of inductive inferences are positively outstanding and revolutionary.
