This review is from: Selected Plays Brian Friel (Irish Drama Selections) (Hardcover)
As far as I'm concerned Friel is one of the best playwrights of the late 20th century. I don't know if he gets the credit he deserves. It may be because generally his plays aren't experimental or *postmodern*. That's fine with me. You can keep those guys. I'll take an author who tells genuinely moving stories about people I can relate to. These works never lecture and they aren't embarrassed to entertain.
In this book: Philadelphia Here I come The Freedom of the City Living Quarters Aristocrats Faith Healer Translations Philadelphia Here I Come and Translations are particular favorites of mine. Philadelphia Here I come is about a young Irish guy about to move to the U.S. (Philly to be exact). And Translations is about English colonialism in the 1830's. Affecting, thought generating treasures. Eminently worth your time and mental space. |
