This review is from: Selected Poems 1957-1994 (Paperback)
Length:: 8:03 Mins

This poem is one of Hughes' best, still meditative on the dark forces of Nature whilst retaining its poetic power. Too often here, Hughes gets rather carried away by the detail of what one could call the anatomy of death so that a professorial drone creeps into some of the poems, so much so that they don't read like poems at all. Nevertheless Hughes is a powerful Primitivist in his best poems, such as this one, where the numinous is terribly and wondrously on full display to great effect.
